but the expenses too
with the people i know in phuket i am sure i could get Ao's mom a cleaning job at a hotel
she would be a tremendous worker
but then you add the cost of living in phuket( especially patong) the amount of money she'd need to go back and forth when she wanted to, it just doesn't make sense
for us farangs involved with thai girls, there is sort of threshold
i don't want my wife working for 10k/mo, 6 days a week, 12 hours a day. I don't look down on any decent paying job, but i don't want my wife working insane hours for no money

Me either Paulie, and that suits a 37 year old gf who owns her house and land and whose daughter is grown up, but it frustrated my last tg (27) to not be working...and part time work is not easy to find

Wages/salary

What do people really earn?

Have often seen it quoted that retail/counter staff eg at a 7/11 get 8k a month. I don't suppose anyone tips someone working there, so that's 'it'.

Friends wife on Phuket at a women's hairdressing salon was on 9k per month plus a share of tips and bonus payments esp when eg they started at 4am preparing all the women for a wedding that day - that one could pay well (comment on this - we hosted a wedding here last month and the make-up person charged 4k for their 3hrs work plus travel costs!)

Here in Sa Kaeo sth east of Bangkok my partner will get 9500 per month, six-day weeks, 8 hour days, doing the accounts for a timber co. Rates may be even lower in Isaan I don't know, this area is quite affluent in terms of the local economy. Tertiary education makes no diff - you want a job, this is what we pay. Of course living costs are cheaper, that's ok money in an area where farm labour may get 150-200 for 10hrs in the fields, on-call only so no guarantee per month. Right now there's a labour shoreforum.xxxe and we've got people on production rates, top women earning up to 750 per day cutting cassava stems. Technically - I don't pay myself - I would have earned 250 before I retired. Too much like hard work!

Friend here, school teacher at high school, 18k mth with 15yrs exp.

Interested in any real salary examples from Phuket or beyond.

Yes, it makes absolutely no sense in comparison but as some have pointed out its not really work "As we know it". There can be a social and perks side to it too. Depends on the available alternative pastimes.

a couple years ago my wife was looking for a job in BKK
she almost got a job at Toyota because of a connection with somewhere there
the pay wouldn't have been great but she would have been learning. i would have been all for that
in Canada, she was only cleaning apartments, so not learning anything, but the pay was so good that it really justified the menial job
plus, she was new to Canada and this was a job she could sort of get to the workplace and do her job, not worry about interacting

Sounds similiar to my friend who married a Viet girl and bought her to Oz............she jumped at the opportunity to work 6 days and week, and on her day off.....does housework.....she is happy because the money she makes (job is unskilled labour and on the minimum wage) a portion of it goes back to her family, who are also chuffed at their new income stream !

I'm not sure if hubby is that pleased, as he works odd hours in his job, and is often sitting at home alone !

Would she be happy to work 6 days in Oz on Viet income ?.......l suspect not.....and l suspect the same would be for most TGs abroad......it's easier to be motivated when you get paid western wages !
