I just saw a bar in Soi Eric for sale for 2.2M with 1.5 years left on the lease, thats $63K, for 18 months, i have no idea what the bars make but seems like a lot of cash to me, maybe would pay that for MTB.

How does this current situation affect prices? Not just hotels, but taxies and tuk tuks? And will sellers of beach clothes and that kind of items still start at 1000 bath for a beach towel? When I stay in Patong I usually go to other beaches during daytime, and last winter I had problems getting taxis below 300 bath for a 10-15 minutes ride. Still same-same?

While I welcome fewer tourists than last winter when I arrive late January, this certainly isn’t good. I guess crime will arise big time.

Or, just as easily, it means to prevent your associates from passing THEIR consumption onto you. Both are equally wrong, and nothing that was said up above indicated that she wasn't willing to pay her fair share.

Of course, I was just reading half an hour before seeing this, that others were doing this. The "solution" as posted above, was that people wouldn't go back to that same bar again. As I see it, this lady wouldn't allow things to happen even once, never mind the not-going-back.

AS long as the Thai landlords have farang owners to sell the bar to the next farang, then why should the landlords be reasonable. Not until they have a soi with 60% bars going unleased, will they have any incentive to lower their rates. Even at 50% vacancy rate, they still make loads, and know that to lower their rates, they are giving up potential future profits in the next upturn. And if they lowered their rates 50%, they would need a full soi , just to make the same money they make with the soi 50% full.

They figure if times are bad they will have vacancies at any rate, so why lower their rates, and sacrifice future profit? When good times return, they will still come out ahead. I would think they could easily withstand a few slow years.

I rented a car from the airport and didn't patron the taxi and tuk tuk which I hate. So, I don't have info on that. About the shops, i didn't even take a look at the beach shops as I know they are all over priced. Yet, I brought some t-shirts for my daughter at a store inside Junceylon (those stores at the basement and not a shop). At first, the lady (look like an indian) asked for 250 bahts. I paused a while without saying no, she lowered it to 150 bahts. i belive I could still bargain but i didn't as I need to get something for the kids.

For the girls, I never bargain with them, but one in Tiger asked for 3000 bahts for an hour and 5000 for overnight. She also requested for such price to my friend separately. Her friend told us that the price is comparable to the one in Singapore (which they thought we were from). I think she was too optimistic or bring unrealistic as I saw her leaving alone.

IMHO it is called a recession when everything is declining and a depression is the lowest point. i think the proplem the experts have is, to say "ok we are at the depression", because that would state that it can only be up from there!
but i may be wrong!:

btw: we are not at the phuket tourist depression yet. i can see from our bookings and talking to others that the real tourist recession is going to hit us from middle to end of jan.:thumbsdow
