Bodycushion

I thought I would put this here since I am a student and I don't know anything about the bodycushion, but from what I have read, it sounds so comfortable!

I am considering purchasing a set, or a used set.

Anyway, how do you go about turning someone over on one of these? I'm also wondering about any general feedback about them - good, bad, ugly.

Way back in the day, when I was in school, we had to receive massages from professional therapists as well as give them to professionals for a grade. The one lady I went to to receive a massage used a bodypillow
set up. She started me out prone, so that I felt like I was a frog laying on my belly, really quite relaxing actually. When it came time to turn over, I remember her moving a part of the cushion set-up, and me turning over w/ great ease.

The massage has always been memorable to me because that was the first time ever in my life that I believe I was actually floating in mid-air during a massage --- or at least that's what the bodypillow made it feel like.

i agree that it's a wonderful system, although i do not use it for every session.

i start cleints prone, and then when it's time to turn over i tell them to lift up onto their knees and as they turn over they need to put their bottoms where their knees are.

I use the bodycushion for my practice. It definately really rocks with the client prone. Supine only about half my clients like it. Great tool. Definately more hard to turn over with it then just the table. Soo I enjoy my bodycushion but your mileage may vary. They do have a thirty day guarantee so you can try it and see if it works for you.

I personally like it.

I turned to one about a year and a half ago. The only downside is when clients turn onto their stomachs. It's a roll and a army crawl to get to proper face cradle position. Lying face up, it feels as if you are in a chaise lounger.
Only 2 of my clients don't like it. For side lying work, It Rocks!

I don't remember the army crawl. I remember it was very comfortable prone and supine, and if I had to do an army crawl, it was worth it!!!! That may have been more because of the great massage......I'm glad you posted! I need to call you for another appointment!! Though I will behave and not call at this time of night.

I suggest to use it with my clients. I find its about a fifty fifty split on people who really like it and people who just don't care for it.

I've had the body cushion for about two years. I find the system difficult to use, especially when turning people from the prone position to supine. It took a bit of work to figure out how to do a smooth transition dealing with the sheets while moving the torso cushion into place. Additionally, quite a few clients felt the face cradle resting on the table did not provide enough air flow commenting that they felt like they were suffocating. Fitted face cradle covers helped but didn't eliminate this problem entirely.

I was very excited when I got the body cushion system initially but have discovered the majority of my clients didn't like it. FWIW, I think if you do sports massage on folks where they remain dressed it is far easier to use.

I agree its hard to turn people over using the bodycushion system. But one way to make it easier is to use a table extension so the bodycushion stays in one place. I have purchased a table extension for that reason.

As far as suffocating feeling. None of my clients have mentioned that, but I kind of had that feeling for a little bit. Figured it was a way to overcome my phobia of confined spaces. After using the system where the bodycushion shines is the way it exposes the body to let the practiontioner work on it in an easy way. Everything is just out there.

I have a Body Cushion. Wish I would have taken one of Colleen's classes first. She is in process of patenting the Breast Rest. It's full table size and is more comfortable/easier to use than the body cushion.
I am a newbie, so I can't post a link to her website. She is an RN and massage therapist in NH. She practices in Manchester. I took LaStone from her and am hoping to talk her into teaching Lomi Lomi. She spent a month living in a tent in Hawaii taught directly by Auntie Margaret.

sorry to hear of your troubles...
I must ask though, why are you moving the cushion and why is the cradle on the table?

The cushion comes with the platform to raise your existing cradle and the scapulae fall into the breast holes when you turn.

Bobblehead, are you speaking of the roughly 3" hard plastic platform to which the face cushion attaches? If so, I have that. It -- platform and face cushion -- rests on the table.

As to where I learned about moving the cushion: my system was accompanied by a video demonstration of all the things the system can do. It shows the cushion being moved when the client turns from prone to supine.

Yes, i use the velcro on the back and stick it straight on my tilting face-rest.
I do find turning more difficult than with just the table, but the benefits for some clients (pregnancy, obesity, breast augmentation etc.)are well worth it...
As for the video and moving the cushion, i would have to dust off the vhs and go see, but now that i think about it i am sure you are correct.
Seems odd and inefficient though as for most of my clients their scapulae and chest are pretty level...

Bobblehead...no worries about coming across critically. I appreciated your question. It made me think about how I used the body cushion and why. Soooo...with my clients this past week I've tried using the central cushions with my regular tilting face cradle.

I would rate it a less than stellar success.

The clients were all good sports to try it out but the issue still comes down to the face cradle. Either it is low putting their neck in an awkward position while supporting the face or when I add additional cushioning the client then complains of suffocation. I love the way the central cushions support the body. Unfortunately the face cradle isn't working for me (or my clients).

Lol, oh well. Oakworks makes an inflatable cushion that you may find more to your liking. Btw, had a magazine right here on the desk that has a pic of the BC used exactly like you said... Too quick to type, he he...

I was required to buy a BodyCushion package for school, and it was a ridiculous waste of money. (Around $375) The cushions themselves are fair quality but the face cradle uncomfortable and poorly made compared to my Oakworks Aurora massage table. (Which was the same price, and it is a table not a few pieces of foam.)

They are okay for prone work on the floor (on a mat), but with $30 piece of foam and some fabric I made myself a set of cushions I like better for that. I find them far too awkward to use on the table with sheets for almost all clients. The few times they might be useful, I find my "normal" bolsters serve just as well and are easier to maneuver.

I have a reputation of dealing sensitively and respectfully with clients with unusual bodies and I found these clients often uncomfortable with a body support that seems designed with a certain body shape in mind. (Even if it turns out to fit them comfortably, it triggers size issues. Massage chairs are terrible for this.) So it just isn't a good fit for my practice.
