calling all loofah soap people!

Hey, did any of you make that soap using the loofah? I'm doing it today so if there are other helpful tips, let me know. I'm craft challenged!! Does the serated knife work well to cut it into slices, or should I try an electric nife for cleaner more uniform slices?

Did you get whole loofas? They have seeds....
I think an electric knife would work best. Make sure your soap is pretty thick before you pour it in, or else it might leak out! Be sure to send me some.

One very very important question.........are you using a natural loofah or a plastic one?

I did this for a client giveaway around the holiday. I had one client who owns a salon love it so much she asked if I'd make some for her to sell in her salon.

I found my loofahs at Target. I poured the soap in right away and I think the next time I'll wait a bit before pouring. The bottom piece ended up having an excess of soap on it. I used a serrated knife to cut and it wasn't easy. If I end up doing this on a more regular basis I'll invest in an electric knife (would be nice to have one anyway!). If not, I'll have hubby cut it for me. I wrapped mine in cellophane and tied with raffia. Turned out really nice, my clients loved it!

I'll ask again. Is this soap thing made with a natural loofah which is oblong in shape. or one of those plastic loofahs that kind of loo like a scour pad.{for the body} HELP!!!!!!!!! :?

I used to be able to get it at K-Mart, Walmart, Shopko.....even the dollar store had it! I've been looking for 2 weeks and can only find the (very expensive) short pieces on a stick or on a rope. Maybe they went out of style in southern WI? Sigh. I guess I'll put my mom on it, lol. She's in AR. Maybe I should just grow some!

Hi I went to Walgreens and bought two loofahs.$1:99 each. I'll confess I made one with the plastic scrunchie loofah,{ I told you I was a craft flunky} Well, after I got home, I stuck the plastic scrunchie in a glass measuring cup and remelted it so I could get the soap out to reuse it on the natural loofah. One natural loofah is cured in the refrig. and I'll slice it tomorrow and see what it looks like. Who ever has done this, did you slice it in circles or did you do half slices???

Just a head's up. Walgreen's has glycerin soaps 3/$1 limit of 6 at one time. The coupon was in this week's circular but they typically have circulars when you walk in. I checked the ingredients and there doesn't seem to be any tallow in it unless of course it's under a different name :?: Snagged myself 6 peach ones yesterday. Today I'll go in and get 6 apple ones.

Thanks for the glycerin soap tip at Walgreens. My soap came out great!!
It worked best for my husband to take the loofah down to his saw in the basement and 1,2,3... it was cut nicely. I did try one piece in the shower and, it's a bit on the rough side//// the loofah, I might be a wimp with my skin, though. : I think it would work great as a pumice stone!

Also, another tip, when you fill the loofah with the melted soap and put it in the refrig. look at it in an hour. The soap will have absorbed into the loofah and you'll need to add more melted soap to fill it to the brim. This was fast & fun.

Help! I tried to make the loofah soap today and it didn't go so well. I had my loofah all wrapped up and taped up and ready to go. I tried to melt the soap and that's where I ran into trouble.

Earlier this month while at the Semi-Annual Clearance sale at Bath & Bodyworks I bought their glycerin soap. It was on sale for $1 each and even though they didn't list the ingredients I thought it would be ok and I just love their scents. Well.....I tried to melt the soap in the microwave and all it would do is make a clumpy mess. YUCK!

So, then I tried the soap that I bought at Walgreens (with the coupon) and the same thing happened! They don't list tallow as one of the ingredients so I thought it would work.

Now I have 5 bars of clumped up mess and nothing to pour into my loofahs.

Any suggestions?? Where do you buy your soaps? Any brand recommendations??

Clearly Naturals glycerine soaps melt nicely. I found a great source of loofahs totally by accident, last night. The local Mexican grocery store had 3' loofahs for $3.99! They're great. Some of them are obviously gourd shaped, but I figure with slicing them, who cares? I picked through and found the straightest one, but if I decide to make a lot more, I'll take what they have.
