the going rate for a traffic infraction in mexico is 100-200 pesos(i have been pulled over for legitimate reasons on every occassion). never offer the officer the money up front as they can get you for bribery. ask him how much is the ticket, tell him you only have 100 or 200 pesos, and simply pay him.

and then you'll be on your way.

as a gringo, arguing or debating with a police officer here in mexico is something i would strongly advise against.

LOL, sometimes I think I do with all the misinformation out there, someone has to tell the truth. You do not know how many time I hear someone say "I know a guy......" and I ask them what was your experience. When I bring people here they are like WTF is everyone talking about.

The bullshit stories actually are what make gringos scared and some hand their money to an officer as they really think they will go to jail and never see the light of day.

Many years ago, the best think I learned on a site like this was how to handle the police. I paid attention and handled it just like the guy posted. I wish I remember his handle, as I should give him credit.

I will stand by my statement. Although anything you posted can easily happened, the operativos are not set for that purpose. Normally Gringos are just waved through. It has been my experience since I moved here in 2000.

There was a day when a couple of my police officer friends would tell me in advance where the operativos would be. I really was not concerned as I don't use drugs and don't drive drunk.

Since the Olden Days legend tells of the "Dealers" in Mexico who entrap the buyers by reporting them to Policia. The Police then worked with the Dealers to give them their goods and then Soak the $hit out of the Americans. It does not just happen on the border. The Police in Tijuana have been cleaned up but still want Gringo dollers.

A couple years back 2 Mexican Police were chasing a fleeing auto northbound into the US. They were so intent on catching the car they blew through the US Border crossing in Eastern California and kept going! When the Border Patrol searched the Policia had Methamphedimine on them. I think a lot of Mexican Police have available "throw down packs" of dope they can pin on who ever they want-sorry your way off there...

I can guarantee you the operativo was not set up for gringos. Some taxi driver could have seen the opportunity and took it, but to think those are set up to extort gringos is just silly.

I usually only ask about the weather, or a "how's business tonite, jefe" to the taxi drivers. Seems to me to talk smack about the their government, their police, or the illegal drug situation might be offensive to them. I also usually tip $10 one way to the AB and back. They seem to appreciate it. Remember, you're just a guest there.

Well I disagree; one time I was talking shitz about how lousy the Tj Policia are on the late nite Taxi ride back to the frontier. The older driver seemed to agree the Tj Police were bad,,, he gets on the radio with one of his bandito amigos, speaking a lot of fast Spanish.
When I jumped out at the Sentry post...I think he tipped off the Mexican cops who shook me down.
They restrained me and took my watch and about $40-50 made a few threats and let me go- like the rat pack pussys they are!
I use Yellow Taxi exclusively- but would not recommend confiding in any way with the quasi-narc Taxi drivers of TJ. Furthermore...do not ask the taxis to take you to Chicago Club,,,some refuse , just say Atalita! $5 no more !!!

Years ago, I had one too many in one of those dives near the Jai Lai coliseum and couldn't pay for it. Cop escorted me into the back of his squad car along with couple other upstanding gents. Was released next day at noon w/o a fine.

Not too long after that, I was coming out of one of the seedy hotels with a BG from the old Bambi Club and two gents claiming to be plainclothes cops stopped me, told me prostitution was illegal, then drove me around TJ until I forked over what I had in my pocket (they wanted $350 but I only had about $180 or so). They never threatened me except with couple days in jail. They dropped me off at the McDonalds, copied down info from my ID and told me not to return. Went back after about 6 mos.

The other day there was one of TJ's finest walking around in AB. Being in a generous mood, I bought him an energy drink. He seemed appreciative. Hopefully, I banked some good karma with TJPD.

If some guys want to drive their rides south, then IMO they're pushing their luck. I myself refuse to do it. I rather spend big using taxis. And HoWhisperer you are implying that the turistas are gringos. I disagree and they probably don't even account for half of the tourists. What else is there in TJ besides everything that has been mentioned? There's an airport and guess what many Latinos and Mexicanos drive from the states to drop off/pick up someone and they're also tourists cause they'll do other stuff in TJ. But yeah some gringos are gonna go like 'they must be locals.'

Now I have strike up a conversation with cabbies. And in an exclusive GQ report one cabbie has told me he used to deal drugs but after serving time in TJ he went straight. I didn't feel threatened and who knows if he has stopped dealing. We had a nice conversation and he never told me if I could take a "box" to the states.

Years ago when I was younger and stupider, I would walk to the border to save the $5 cab fare. I saw people getting held up by the cops, and searched, however these people were drunk and obnoxious and were giving the cops reasons to crack their skulls open. From that I at least learned to slow down the drinking and be in control. Now that I'm older I take the cab and try to avoid the jailhouse fisting.

A few years back I was walking around the edge of the Zona at nite and got stopped by Policia and searched- the switch was the police were not corrupt and not looking for a mordida...When they searched me they said it was a bad "drug area" they looked at my hands and fingers for blisters or burns- then they shine a flashlite looking up your nose looking for coke. What was really strange ( beside not taking my $$$ ) the 2 Policia officers asked where my car was and if I had a hotel room in TJ ??? DAMM...good thing old HO was a step ahead and I left my HOtel key on the trim above the door!
