I don't know of a particular test other than to test and rule out a severe problem, maybe someone else does? Please correct me if I am wrong but as I understand it, Sciatic pain is caused from a nerve impingement at S1.

It surely isn't nice.

I would like to know how accupuncture works to relieve the problem if not take it away. Someone said something to me the other day that I found interesting. If accupuncture in all it's 5000 year old experience and knowledge which hasn't changed could be put together with modern day Neurology which is always changing and improving. I wonder what great new ways could be discovered?

I believe the sciatic nerve can also be affected by cold/damp
energy entering the nerve from the heel of the foot. There
are a number of good treatments listed in a book I have ,
Tsubo Vital Points for Oriental Therapy by Katsusuke
Serizawa.

The same book also has a short section on Night Crying,
which may be of help for your little guy. It says to massage the accupressure/accupuncture points GV-12
(just below the 3rd thoracic vertebra) Work down from the
hairline on the rear of the neck toward the shoulders. When pressure is applied to GV12 the child will move or react strongly. Also include BL-18 (either side of spine, just above the 3rd ribs up from the base of the ribcage) & BL-12 (either side of spine, below the 2nd lumbar vertebra, close to waist level). Pressure should be light, (500 to grams to 1 kilogram).

causes of sciatic pain, per my resident chiropractic student:

Piriformis syndrome (tight piriformis entrapping the sciatic nerve)
trigger point in piriformis (referring pain all the way into the heel)
L4-S2 nerve impingement (sometimes L3, for some people the sciatic nerve is in that plexus as well)
trigger points in gluteus medius

Thank you, Chris that's some info for me to keep. And also to Riversinger. I must tell you that I tried everything to stop the boy waking and screaming but I found the answer by accident it seems. I got him a big soft polar bear for his bed and suddenly he sleeps well.

I'm still pondering my accidental genius????
