My impression from stories from what I heard and read is that marriage between distant cousins were pretty commonplace when transportation wasn't as easily accessible as it is today. People couldn't get around with horse and buggies back then as we can today with planes and cars. People more or less hooked up with others of their hometown small villages. Hence the more likelihood of marrying up with people of their own families, so to speak.
