Elephants and August

Ok a few brief questions,

1. where is the best place to go if i want to ride an elephant? and 2, what will the weather/conditions be like if i go to bkk/phuket around the end of august? is it a very touristy time of the year or not? cheers

There's an elephant ride place on the way to Safari disco.

August is little high season - school holidays. Rainy September/October not started yet

Not sure about Phuket but if you get up north in Chiang Mai there are great days out with Elephant riding.

There was a couple on the day out same time as me and they said it was a lot better there than anything around Bkk they had tried.

Just ask a taxi or tut-tut to take you to the elephant treking place! Simple! Its where the paintball, snake show and a few other things are.

i once rode one on my first trip to phuket-- -- it was horrendous
the one in front shat constantly , from being over-worked (imo) and the out-put stank!

also it had japanese boys on its back-- they thought it highly amusing
i strongly advise any one mounting a packderm not too---! health and safety doesnt exist whilst doing so

Ayutthaya makes a nice day trip from Bangkok.They have elephants for rent there and you can ride among the ruins of the ancient capitol.

Didn't try it myself,but they seemed verrrry slooooow,and didn't smell that great.
(You'd think they'd smell better with those big noses........sorry:embrassed )

I toured the ruins by toyota corolla taxi and it only stank a little.

Did an elephant ride at a small place just north of Patong and Kalim last year. It was about an hour (which is way long enough). It's on the rt hand side as you leave Kalim, up a single lane road. Its signposted with a small sign. Well worth the experience. There are others, but this one is close to Patong, and elephants seemed to be well treated.

Hi Wolfsbaine, Hope you have a great trip. I was over there in late August last year, there was an Elephant ride leaving from a bar on the road to the Kata lookout, about 600m from the top, on the western side. I think it was called sunset bar and is a great place to watch the sun go down. The Elephants also seemed to be enjoying it and looked a whole lot happier than the ones in the Phuket zoo. It also has a couple of monkeys swinging around, so if you go there don't leave your keys lying on the bar! Top spot. As for rain, yes we saw a bit but usually in the afternoons and not everyday. Mostly just showers for 30 mins to an hour. Couple of times it rained all night but that just freshens the place up a bit. Enjoy.

Thai Elephant Conservation Center

It is in Lampaing, you can fly there or take a train, and the rates are very reasonable. I took the three-day mahout course and it was a blast. Plus a lot of hard work-- elephants eat 21 hours a day.

Attached is an image of Pratchuap, my pachydermian princess, a true find. 25 years old, single, no kids... but high mainteance.

It took a couple of days but I ascertained a number of "entertainment" tricks of the resident mahouts. For instance they yell, "Bon zoom!" when you and your sweetie are engaged in one of your five daily baths. That causes the mahout's elephant to shoot out a spray of water from its trunk. Of course if you are quick you can grab the end of the trunk and point it back to the mahout.
