Etiquette for Applying to Spa/Center/Office

The clinic where I have worked for the last few years has closed. I find myself beginning a job search. I'm interested in finding an established location for which to work.

What is the best way to get my foot in the door?

I don't think that mailing a resume and cover letter is going to do anything. Should I just drop in, and ask if the owner is available for a couple of minutes? Should I call in and try to schedule a two minute dropin?

I'm very interested in responses from owners; what would be the least intrusive thing for me to do that will still get me noticed?

We've got a few threads on this, I believe, but I don't have time to do a good search right now. One of us will help you with that, I am sure.

Personally, I would prefer that you place a phone call to ask if I am hiring and also ask at that time (if I were not), if you could take the fax number and send your resume in case something came up in the future. Many of the larger places (and some small) will save resumes for future reference.

I wrote something on my blog that has a little info in it. Just search the "search box" for "job", "interview" or some such if you are interested in reading it.

We have received resumes via e-mail, mail, walk-in, and hand delivery (by someone other than applicant). Sometimes people call first to inquire whether we are hiring, but most do not. All of the above are perfectly acceptable to us. However, checking ahead to see if we are looking to hire is also an opportunity to learn who to talk to and when we might be around. Showing up to hand-deliver your resume while presenting a professionally-appropriate image is a great first impression. If you ask for the right people by name and happen to catch us with a few free minutes, you might even get an interview on the spot... so leave some time free for talking.

I'm a co-owner of a multi-disciplinary practice and for a long time, we didn't have an office manager or anyone to answer the phone or greet people at the door. So we had to answer our own phone and do our own door-greeting. Although we only had a few patients/clients, we also had lots of other projects to attend to. Thus, much like the incessant salespeople, job-hunters, although we admired what them for their efforts, were a massively intrusive interruption, particularly if they stopped in. This was also true (although less so) if they called. Our preferred method of communication from anyone who wasn't looking to schedule an appointment/become a patient or client was either email or regular mail, so that we could look at the inquiry when it was convenient for us. Yes, it's true that those resumes often got filed indefinitely, because we were in no position to hire anyone just yet. But, that was the reality of a small start-up clinic.

Now that we've just hired our first office manager, it's a bit different. I don't see any problem with someone calling us as long as they don't tie up the phone line too long. I'd prefer that to someone stopping in unannounced, because the office person could be knee-deep in things to do (checking people in and out, scheduling appointments, returning phone calls, etc). Our lobby isn't real big, so if someone dropped in, they could disrupt the traffic flow and potentially displace a patient = not ideal.

So I would say, call first, and always be mindful of that practice's need to generate income first and foremost, and realize that as someone not looking to become a customer, your needs probably won't take first priority. Please don't take that wrong - I'm not trying to be mean. It's just that this (mostly salespeople, but some job-hunters as well) had become kind of a pet peeve of ours. And in truth, we treat our staff extremely well - we're fairly laid-back in most respects. Comb the job ads and see if the place you'd like to work is actually hiring; for those that aren't, just be as non-intrusive and polite as you can. They'll remember you for your professional demeanor and conscientiousness
