First time in Phuket

Hi Fellows,

I'm planning to visit Phuket for 7-10 days in October. I'm a relaxed type guy, just planning to chill out on the beach day time (books/music etc) and have a few drinks, take out some sweety for LT at night time. I'm not really a disco or go-go type person, more of a beer-bar type. Eating wise, I'm very much into thai food (street side stalls are even better).

I was wondering, with current low season and financial state in Phuket, how much it'll cost me per day to have some good time (my way). I plan to spend around 3,000 to 3,500 baht/day (exclusive of accommodation), you think that should be enough?

Welcome to the board. As far as money goes it's really up to you! Yes you can easily do it on 3000-3500 Baht a day as long as you don't go crazy buying lady drinks or ringing the bell and don't have a full time companion you are feeding 3 times a day. Throw in a few tours/shopping and your budget can get eaten up quickly.

Tour prices are normally between 1.400 - 2.200 and usually last from 8:00 in the morning to 6:00 in the afternoon. They include all transports and lunch.

If it is your first time in Phuket you should definately make the Phi Phi islands and James Bond tours

It depends how often you want company. If You pay 500 bf and 1500 for the company. Some hotels will have a joiner fee for an unregistered guest at 100 -???? baht some hotels don't charge. Always ask before you book. Throw in a couple of cheap Tshirts lunch and the odd drink or massage and you can see 3000 a day might be a bit light on if you want to do a tour or two. If you are on that budget I would say make a choice girl or tour for that day.

sorry mate I just cannot see how you can live, eat and have fun on that amount...you are travelling thousands of miles to live on a budget ?? maybe its just me and I am wrong (not the first time or last) but I think 10k is the absolute minimum a day thats just my opinion...if you do manage it on 3/5k post a tr and show us how its done would be a very interesting read.

Beer in bars is between 80 - 120 for a small bottle.
You can have dinner with good fish (lobster / prawn and squid) and 2-3 beers around 800 - 1000 i guess.
When we were in Samui we had good breakfast (4 star hotel) and we skipped lunch.
We used to buy a corn on the cob on the beach (50) and a pineapple or mango another 50.
Tours as i said are around 1.400 - 2.200 so you can add the above and make a guess for your budget.

3,500 maybe do-able in Pattaya, but in Phuket I would add another 1000 each day.

Do you have holes in your pockets? Suffer from the same problem as Michael Douglas? In nearly 2 years i've never spent that much purely on eating and entertainment and i'm a fairly healthy deviant.

Well, like I said, I'm not planning to do any tourist thingys this time, so there's no money to spend in that department (If I do, I'll definitely add that cost on the top of figure I mentioned). I don't eat much, about twice a day and I don't drink much as well. So I was thinking like -

Food - 200/300 baht/day (from street side stalls)
Relaxing in the beach - 200/300 day (water, snacks, beach chairs etc cost)
night life - 600/800 baht on drinks
LT from Beer bars - 2000 maximum (500 BF + 1500 LT)

I already contacted my preferred accommodation and they confirmed no joiners fee.

So, all those add up to about 3000/3500 everyday. But it appears my calculations are not right. I can increase my budget to 5000/6000 but I'm not sure if it's worthy of it as plenty of mates asked me to stick to bangkok or pattaya as they found phuket's value for money is not good.

If you manage to only spend 600 to 800 THB a night on drinks I will be VERY suprised.

The rest is do able. But doesn't leave much for enjoying yourself!

Well, I reckon that its do-able, especially if you are staying out of Patong. Depending where you are staying you might want to add say 120-200 baht a day for motor-cycle taxi.
I reckon your budget is a bit light on the food side, a staple diet from food stalls may cause havoc with your stomach. But it seems, from what you say, that this is only a budget and you will have cash reserves.
October can be very wet, so you may need to plan what to do if the beach isn't on. Excursions, bars, massageplanetes, cinemas, bowling, will all add to your costs.

dude, i think your numbers stack up well. your beer money will get you at least 5 bottles ...if you're not a big drinker thats prob fine. I've gotta pal who would be on his ass after 5 beers -he's chinese, some nonsense about genes.
happy hour will double that volume.

assuming you won't have a lady with you every night (?) while on yer hols, you'll easily get by on 3.5k if you don't splash it about too much. why not try picking a honey up in a club...no bar fine! ...or even try it the old fashioned way and pick up a girl without paying for it -thats much more fun, and is certainly possible. Although sometimes we all like a sure thing!

I think your calculations do add up....some days you will be up and some down.Think you could proberely save on barfines and long time if you pick up a hottie at Taipan or one of the other night spots.As you said you looking for quiet a laid back time....Just take some extra cash incase you change your mind and want to go crazy....There is something for everybody in Phuket

is there a reason you want to keep to a budget????

hell you are talking about 50-60 quid a day on your lower budget (3500bht) and less than 100 quid a day on your upper level (5-6000bht)

I would say the upper level is doable and the lower one will curtail your enjoyment of your holiday.....

I'm not visiting Phuket only, it's a part of my whole trip. Coming to Thailand for 28 days total and will spend most in Pattaya/Bangkok. Never been to phuket so thought I'd give it a try this time for a week or so. Altogether, I'm about to spend a lot and I'll end up spending most in bangkok/pattaya I believe.

3500/night is not my strict budget, I'll definitely have far more with me to spend but doesn't mean I'll have to spend'em all. I'm just trying to figure out whether it is possible to enjoy myself IN MY WAY with that amount in this first re-con trip.
