Free Lancers

Hallo Everyone...
Im new here and is really enjoying ALL your opinions. im sure it will help me alot come december when I head to Patong for the first time.
After reading a few threads I decided to travel alone because according to some of you its just as much fun traveling alone.
My question is regarding Free Lancers? Who are they? What do they do? Im not tight on money and will be taking plenty over, but it just seems as if it is a way better deal getting a FL than it is to pay a bar fine. Or is it that FL aren't usually as good looking as bg, or hard to find?? and then do you think there would be any problems picking FL up in the clubs as im traveling alone?

A FL is just a thai girl who does not work in a bar, but spends her time in the night clubs looking for her customers. They range from girls who do this full time, who usally build a pattern of the same few clubs at the same times per night, to a local girl on a night out supplementing her income with the odd customer/[potential husband.

No problems picking them up in any club, they will find you as often as you finding them. No difference in looks, only potential problem with a FL, is if you had cause to complain, then you have no one to complain to, not that every bar owner would support your claim anyway. Second aspect is that bg's are supposed to be health checked every so often, FL do not have to, but there again how accurate or much protection that would give you in my opinion is minimal.

My experience with freelancers is that they are just regular girls who you can meet at the discos on the streets or just about anywhere...the approach is tricky because I dont want to make any assumptions about whether a girl is a freelancer or not... I always make eye contact and then go for a bit of discussion with the girl and let her be the one who makes any remarks about money... I have had great times with FL's for me it is more natural to pick up a freelancer compared to paying a barfine any day of the week... I travelled alone for my first trip and found that the freelancers were just as pretty as other girls..there are a few risks with them as well but if you keep your head on straight most of the time a great time can be had..... good luck

I prefer freelancers as I am not much of a drinker, I'm not in Patong to drink, I can do that at home, but to @#&*. Yes, you can also save money with FLs, no BF, LDs etc. (especially when BGs are asking for you to buy drinks for their friends now it is low season), but I think prices have risen slightly for FLs too. Plenty of stunners, as well as ones they you may not fancy. The major drawback for me is that many FLs do not come out till late at night, I'm talking 2-3am, so might be a little late for some, and if you don't find one you like you might have to sleep alone, unless you have your beer goggles on :

I would add that there are different types of FL as well.
At one end you have those that stand on Bangla and look like they are waiting for a friend. They usually stand alone and barely speak to the next only 3 feet away and try to make eye contact as you pass or even wave.
The general advice is that these are to be avoided. Nicke has said that they are often 'misfits' in some way, given the Thais natural propensity to cluster up with their pals, and that they have often failed in the social scene/heirachy of the bars. They are also liberally dotted with LBs. They have noone to answer to if they do the 'wrong thing' when at the room ( not that you can complain successfully to every bar owner if the same thing happens). I have heard complaint that they sometimes have an 'enforcer' lurking in the background, tho a good hotel would never let him in.
There are also the opportunist FL, who as Dodge said, has a job, but at that moment has some 'spare' time. She may accidently start talking to you and subtley state her single status and enquire as to the whereabouts of your hotel, offer up her number and/or hope she can visit occasionaly.
And as Bawdy said, the late night FL is probably the most numerous. Geez, Thaipan must of had 500 in there after the WC, all smiling and doing anything from dancing provocatively in front of you, to brushing closely by, to casting a subtle smile or a wink.
But at 4am , and generally with a job the next day, most are looking for a quick ST or rather a quick 1000 baht.
Any venue that could attract them in the day time , or even at 10pm, would do well in my view.

Definitely a lot of FL's out at the end of the night. Some particularly nice ones too. It's generally not hard to work out which ones are, as they tend to come up to you! Outside of the girl I spent most of my time with who technically wasn't a BG as they actually had to work and you couldn't BF them, I was with 2 FL's. The first one was on my very first night, and to be honest don't remember a whole bunch about it. Haha. But the 2nd one.... WOW. Amazing. I had my doubts as to whether it was a LB at first. You know, the whole to good to be true. But I couldn't tell! And like said, was amazing so wouldn't care if she was!

Haha. I did ask her straight up! All in good humour, she let me check for the adams apple. She was a good sort. Very fiesty. If she was, she had had the op, and no way I could tell.

I was curious about the LB scene, but nothing came of it. Well at least this time anyway.

Feelancers are largely girls who have finished their shift in a bar/gogo/massage joint already, have not scored a customer and head to a nightclub or another bar to do so.....the other major demographic is the gals who choose to not work bar at all and just head to the nightclub to pick-up guys to make their living, some of these will also frequent bars with the owners permission....in lesser numbers there are also the girls who are working in non P4P jobs out in clubs etc trying for a bit of extra cash on the side however this % is far greater in BKK than it is in say Phuket/Pattaya

Avoid freelancers until you get some training via the established bars.....that is the advice I give to all first timers.

Good advice Minder. Had lots of freelancers with absolutely no trouble but there is always a first time. It's handy to know what to expect and even more handy to know if something doesn't seem right and that only comes with experience. Also, if possible, get the freelancer to drop off her/his ID at the front desk just in case. Better safe than sorry.
