Thanks Marc. Unfortunately, Canadians don't have as great an image in the world as we used to, and not as good as Canadians like to think these days.

But that said, it's not that I don't want to be identified because of negative opinions of Canadians (most people seem to be pretty ok with us), rather just because I'm not so Canadian anymore. All my knowledge of Canada is from the '90s and before, and I've never worked there (professionally) or even been there for any of my post-university life.



...yeah, that's post is a good example of why I don't like to identify as Canadian 555

In Hua Hin tonight about midnight. I was at a bar run by a friend about 500m out of town, around soi 82 and decided to leave. A girl was giving me a lift into town towards bintabaht on her bike and we stopped at the 711 near soi 82 and went inside. Came outside and I was about to get on her bike to complete the journey and I saw a girl running towards the 711 shouting. I didn't pay much attention for a couple of seconds as I have seen many Thai girls late at night behaving differently. Almost immediately I noticed the girl was running really fast, faster than just messing around. A Thai guy was immediately behind her. Sensing in a second or two there was a problem and the problem was violent I ran between the two and momentarily in a split second brushed the Thai guys right shoulder. He continued running and went to attack the girl.

In a split second I went to hold his right wrist when I saw he was holding a gun which was pointing at my face, full on at about a foot away. The girl was on the floor screaming almost beneath my feet. I backed off with my hands in the air saying something like "woooooaaaa". I went back around the corner of the 711. The girl I was with grabbed my arm pulling me towards her bike.

I was able to see the 711 looking though the window and saw the guy pulling the girl along the floor. I then went back from around the corner of the 711 and shouted "stop, stop". The gun reappeared and I then retreated.

The girl I was with was now saying words to the effect "you die you die" and we went off up the soi on her bike.

Not the first time I've seen gun crime in Thailand. What would other farang have done?

I can remember having had six run-ins while in Thailand.

Three of them have been with Thais over bike parking - they were right (almost) and I was wrong (but not terribly). Actually one guy then apologized to me and we shook hands. Nothing bad happened in any case, but certainly it would have, had I been insisting enough.

The other three have been with Westerns, pure jerks. I think they probably have got their **** beaten more than once, so they switched to picking on other falangs.

hmm, so i am not the only one to have some "strange behaviour" directed to me by europeans or just tourists in general. What i mean is when i was walking down bangla road mainly or rat u thit road, on occasion i would get a tourist (usually in a group and usually wearing singlets) put a shoulder on me as they walk by. At first i didnt think much of it and shrugged it off as an accident, then it happened a few times and it wasnt like there wasnt a lot of space around me so it was almost like they intentionally didnt want to let me pass without a bit of a shoulder. It was weird as it happened far more in thailand than it does for me in other countries or even back home. Started to get a bit frustrated by it.

Not as unique to Canadians as it used to be!

Just an observation from me mind! Typical one in Dubai. Groups of lads fresh in from Kabul or Afghanistan. Into the bar, big velcro stars and bars on the shirts, luggage and grab bags. As soon as they split up and get their respective flights, the now 'individual' discretely takes the 'S&B's' badge off or replaces it with a 'Maple Leaf' - What's all that aboot hey?

I just stick with the bowler hat and me thong.

Having lived here in Patong now for over one year, i can report zero negative experiences with any Thais. I go out regularly but never get totally pissed and always am polite as if I were a guest in someone's home - I am.
The only unpleasant incident was totally my fault when I went to the wrong vendor's stall on floor three at Jungceylon with a complaint over an item i had purchased. Profuse apologies on my part and some words in Thai from my lady quickly got it back under control.
Everything I observe in Patong tells me that demeaning, rude and alcohol fueled ignorant behavior from tourists results in most negative Thai behavior. it's amazing to me how difficult it is for tourists to do a quick currency conversion and remember that often disputes are over $7.00 USD, not $200.
As previously stated, behave like a guest, be easy going, friendly and pleasant to ensure a fun time during your stay.
And always, always, respect the ladies. The reward is beautiful memories for life.
Of course, one caveat - don't rent a jet ski.

Its weird though as in thailand on holidays, i feel stress free and happy and easy going. It doesnt add up why people would be in thailand and looking for trouble, i thought the whole beauty of going on holidays especially to thailand was relax and chill out and be happy go lucky.

I lived in Hawaii for several years and the Canadians visiting were considered to be "very frugal with their money". My Korean gf owned a gift/souvenir shop and she would say that "Canadians only look, look look, never buy." At the local sports pub they would come in groups of about 10 to watch the Canucks hockey games and get 10 glasses of water, one pitcher of beer, and one appetizer for the full 2 and a half hours they were there. Get their $15 tab to split between the 10 of them and leave a $1 tip. The servers hated them. Being cheap is the only negative thing that I'm aware of...I was under the impression that Canadians are much admired. I don't think the US ever considers building a wall along the northern border.

I would like to think so as well. I think what ends up happening though is kind of what someone stated in another thread. You'll also get the kind of people who are basically ordinary in their home country but go to Thailand and are suddenly rich. I think this gets to some people. Plus you mix that with alcohol and sometimes it gets rotten.

Easy disposable income always attracts the lowest level of scum.
These same Thai guys would be kicking off in the village, at the fairs and concerts.
It is far too broad brush to judge all Thai guys by this 1% - even in Patong.
My only incident in 3.5 years living here fulltime involved a scum farang.

Ive pondered this lack of sustained and numerous brawls nightly in what essentially any Police Psychologist back home would describe as an environment 'alcohol and drug soaked and ripe for violence ', Pabs.
I can only conclude that the availability of female companionship is the 'different' contributing factor.
After all, on top of the above, is an almost total lack of police presence, and bouncers with a mindset to give a kicking to anyone they can...
So it must be pu$$y power that keeps the fighting down.
I mean all the idiot , "Are you lookin at my girl?" crap is not present, and may be a bigger factor in street violence than I ever thought possible...
If thats not it, why do BMs think that Bangla is , all things considered, not that violent? ( If they dont think it is of course.)
