Oh.. I am not complaining about the fact the room was not clean. It was very clean for sure! But I actually meant to say that it was small and not really suitable (in my opinion) for 3 people.
The girls however, did make an effort to create a nice space for themselves. Each of them had a small place for themselves for their own things etc.

Fortunately, my girl and her room mates could get along very well and help each other whenever necessary. That is the positive side and also in this way they could save on costs and send more money home for their children and/or family.

But I gues nobody of us would really like to live in such circumstances, I guess. That is what I was trying to mention.

I've actually wondered about this subject myself. On my last trip, I went to the same bar every night. I witnessed several girls 'empty handed' at 2am, every single night! Some would attract the occassional customer who would stay for a while for a drink or two, before moving on.

As many of these girls are not paid a guaranteed salary, they are effectively 'self employed', in that their income is largely dependant on their own ability to attract customers. And being self employed (anywhere in the world) offers a much better potential income if you do well, compared to a guarenteed, but modest income working for someone else. Thats the risk you take.

And is working in a beer bar so bad compared to the alternatives? Working shorter shifts, the girls get to hang out with their friends, have a laugh, a chat, a drink and a dance. They get to meet and talk to new, interesting people all of the time (eg, BM's!!!!!). They get to pick and choose who they go with after hours, if with anyone. I'm sure that a seasoned BG probably has a good instinct after chatting to a customer, to who is likely to treat them well and to those who are not. I'm sure their friends are happy to chip in with advice also.

I don't pretend to believe that its a pleasant job for the girl, or a job without risks. But maybe the alternative is 12 hours a day, every day, slaving away in a sweatshop for a pittance.

And I've been back to a few girls apartments and I am yet to see the squalor that some of these girls have been said to live in. I've no doubt that some girls do, but I'm yet to see it for myself. And while what we spend in a night in LOS is what some locals earn in a month, don't forget the dual pricing system that exists for the farangs and locals. How much cheaper that is, I honestly don't know.

Perhaps, most importantly, this job may just be a means to an end. The chance to meet a rich farang who will take care of the family. And family comes first to these girls.

Yes many rooms are small compared to our expectations but in some everything is spotless and all pocessions placed in neat order. Its a pride thing in my view. Regardless of where you live and what you do it costs very little to be clean, neat and tidy....just time, effort and self esteem.

I have an offer to stay in BG room on my next trip and I can't see a reson why not to take up the offer.

On the other hand I got "lost" leaving Talbotman at KN hotel last trip and ended up down a corridor trying to find a way to beach road, passed a corridor of rooms and they were "stinking" couldn't stay there...

Also gotta agree with LIL comment on the Burmese workers, they work hard and live hard. Wven to see the working conditions of the civil engineering and building labourers as you walk around is upsetting....those guys and girls are the tough cookies!

That exchange of views did come to mind when I read your post here. I think there are times when we debate for the sport of it. But, actually, the difference is that Thai guys don't pay 2000 or 3000 Baht for girls. And they don't pay 30 to 50% of their income for taxes, nor 30 to 50% of their income for rent/mortgage(as in CA). Take $33,000 and divide by 30, which equals $1100 per night. Then figure what a Thai guy might pay. Let's say 500 Baht on the high end. Then divide by 4 = $225 per night. So $225 for an American would be the equivalent of 500 Baht for a Thai. An American could not get one hour sex w/ a pretty girl, whereas a Thai guy could get LT for his 500 Baht equivalent. That was my point. Not what the girls are making, because their clientele is farangs, but what it costs a regular working stiff, as a perceneforum.xxxe of his average-guy income. Girls servicing the Thai trade do not make that kind of money, except, perhaps an elite few.

Therfore, as far as I can tell, Thais are not as horny and sex-starved as American guys, for whom getting laid can be a more pricey proposition than even for a poor Thai guy, altho it does seem like Craigslist has improved the situation a little bit here, creating better access to talent, easier for girls to generate business, and, therefore, a little more competitiveness, and better prices for the guys. Not a huge difference, but a noticeable one.

So, there is relativity and there is relativity depending on how you are looking at it. Relativity is relative to a person's point of view. In this thread I agree with you entirely!

JB, you should visit some bars where Japanese and Thais go. Try Japanese bars in Soi Thannya (BKK) and see what those Japanese spend. Been there with a friend expat who spoke Thai and a bit of Jap (otherwhise rather closed bars). A lot of money goes around.
Then try some Thai bars and disco's in Ekamai... beautifull girls, but mostly not interested in ST, they want the big money (and LT meaning life insurance). Still some girls around for a night of fun, and of standards above Cowboy, Nana or Patpong.
I even went to the Pink Panter in Phuket town once. If it still excists try it.Those Thais hang necklaces of a few thousand bath around those girls...just for show. A friend found a beauty there.
