In Search of Massage Music

I am looking for my first massage music CDs. I've been checking out "Soundings of the Planet" website. I've listened to lots of the titles, and nothing really pleases my ear. Everything seems to have flute, and I really don't think I like that. Has anyone found anything, maybe guitar or piano?

i LOVE michael hoppe's 'afterglow'. check it out on itunes. 'the waiting' is the one you should try first.

lots of VERY DEEP cello. the rain sound is only on the first nad last song of the album if i remember correctly. this album knocks my clients out completely.

For piano, I love Wayne Gratz - A Place Without Noise. Uplifting and relaxing at the same time. I'll second Martin Tillman and Michael Hoppe's "Afterglow." Absolutely beautiful, though a little melancholy for me at times. Michael Benghiat "At Peace" is really nice but includes a good bit of flute. And some of my clients adore my "Mozart for Massage" CD.

It depends on what you and your clients like. I've been known to massage to everything from floaty flute music to Santana to Evanescence. I did a really fun Shiatsu session to Shiva Rae's "Nataraja" CD once. It's like World-techno fusion. Think outside the box and don't be afraid to try new things.

Oh! and if you want something to absolutely knock your clients out, there is a CD called "Sleep" that they sell at Walmart (at our Walmart it's in one of those displays where you push the buttons to listen, in the candle aisle). It's ocean waves with keyboards. Not my usual style AT ALL, but they often play this for us at school when we exchange and it puts me to sleep every time.

I tend to gravitate toward Dean Evanson. I especially like Tao of Healing and Healing Sanctuary. Both are quite relaxing and can put me into a dreamlike state.

I second Kemilyna's suggestion of Wayne Gratz for piano. John Boswell is also good for piano. For guitar, try Kohala.

Oh god, don't you guys come to my office for a session - I think I have the entire Dean/Dudley Evenson catalog! (And yes, he plays and adores various flutes, so they will all have it.) While I'm blissing out, you'd be hopping off the table! t043

I do keep some piano/guitar/harp for clients who like that, but I just find them too plunky and distracting for my own taste. This is an endlessly fascinating topic for me, who likes what for relaxation music.

Stephen Halpern is a really popular artist for our work too.

I am really liking my Yahoo Music subscription. I just typed in Stephen Halpern's name in the search box in Yahoo Jukebox and Yahoo has 24 (TWENTY FOUR!!) of his albums which I can download to my MP3 player, plug it into my stereo in my treatment room, and play the cd.

I think the absolute worse thing you can have is anything with vocals. A teacher even said that spoken word caused the mind to focus just on the music and hampers the process.
And even more of a worse is vocals in another language. For my final last semister the teacher played this god aweful song in some language I still cant place that repeated itself every 5 minutes. the entire time I was thinking "what language is that in?"

When I receive massage, it all depends on what the actual music is of course, but I love music with vocals in another language. I don't care what language as long as it is tasteful and flows nice for massage. To me it is beautiful to hear language without knowing the meaning of the words...I get to focus on the 'music' of vocals as an instrument. I think that is absolutely delightful and would LOVE to receive a massage with some of my foreign language music. For music with vocals in my own language, it would probably be a smaller window of music that would be acceptable to listen to for massage. I've got a Billy Holiday cd I'd love to have a massage to sometime. Her singing makes my whole being very mellow and happy.

I probable should have put an "I think" at the beginning of my last sentence to make my statement an opinion ^_^

My teach' says she works on a person regularly that requests pink floyd during his session, and my old massage buddy would work out a play list of songs, most with vocals.
So I guess its just diffrent strokes for diffrent folks hehe.

Oh and for the record; the song my teacher played on the final *didnt* actually flow really well. The guy (or was it a girl?) sounded like they were mimicing a sheep going through an oversized foodprocessor with dull blades at some parts.

A lot of MTs have an absolute rule against vocals. The coordinator of the massage program that I'm about to finish is totally against vocal music. It makes me really sad because there is so much good stuff out there.

I LOVE to receive massage to music with vocals. But then, I grew up in a musical family and as a child often fell asleep in the center of a circle of guitar-flute-banjo-mandolin-fiddle-playing, harmony-singing adults. I most dearly love a male voice (Dad's the one who sang the most). And currently, my absolute FAVORITE music to receive massage to is Jai Uttal's Music for Yoga and Other Joys.

Like I said, think outside the box. You'll be surprised what enhances your clients' experience.

On a side note, I usually have the music playing when the client arrives so that I can ask them before the session if it is to their liking.

Ooooh. I'm so jealous of the New York library system! In my county's library, there was just one CD appropriate for massage.
