Kneeling chairs, anyone?

Now that I've finished my course I'm in a dilemma about chairs. I have bad back problems which increase when I give treatments! It's such a nuisance.

I need to consider the best seating option as a practising therapist, and I've been taking a look at the kneeling chairs available at the back shop. for example: [link=http://thebackshop.co.uk/products/products325-details117.html]http://thebackshop.co.uk/products/products325-details117.html[/link]

I'm wondering if anyone has tried using this kind of chair as a therapist and what their experiences are. I know they're usually recommended for office use, but if they're asgood for your spine as they are known to be, then I don't see why they can't be used for both purposes. Unless I'm missing something.

just checked the site. They do have quite a selection don't they? I wouldn't know what to go for without trying them all. They even have a coccyx relief model - I wonder which is the best.

Have you actually given a treatment using one of these chairs? Do you find that it's a problem having a fixed height setting, as opposed to a pump-adjustable type, like the normal swivel chairs? I'll be working at a la-fuma, and I guess the height will have to be based around the height of my la fuma. Which could be difficult as some clients are heavier than others and they weigh the couch down a bit, which makes the height change!

Any one else got any experiences to share?

I've got one of these chairs...had it for ages now and find it very beneficial....I got mine from Argos if that's any help

These chairs were in use at the training school I attended. When used at the end of a massage table, the knees could not be tucked under,preventing the therapist from getting comfortably close enough to the client's feet, especially short clients! We often ended up using the chairs back to front! If you intend to always use a Lafuma recliner, this should be less of a problem, as there will be no chair legs stopping you from tucking your knees below the client's feet. Do check that your chair will adjust to be lowenough for a Lafuma. I'm using the Lafuma 'fishing stool' which is cheap and just the right height for me.

Kachina - looked on Argos site but can't see the kneeling chair! I guess you must have bought it a while ago and they no longer stock it. Or do you know if they have it in-store?

Peaky - I'm having trouble understanding how the knees could get in the way. I've not given a treatment using a table before. Can u explain further as this is a very valid point. Is it because there is something under the table that obstructs the chair? As the knees are pointing downwards on a kneeling chair I can only think this must be the reason. Do you mean it is therefore only possible to give treatment at a table if the therapist sits astride with their legs either side the table?????

Sorry if I'm not explaining properly! The massage tables we used had trestle-type legs at the foot of the bed which criss-crossed just in front of where the reflexologist sat facing the client's feet. If you sat on an ordinary stool or chair, you could put your feet and knees under the table, through the gaps in the trestle. However if you sat on a kneeling chair, the kneeling pads wereobstructed bythe trestle, leaving you sitting some distance away from the client's feet.

I'm a newcomer to this business, and maybe our tables were unusual. I can only speak from limited experience.

Hi all,

I use a therapy stool on wheels ~ I prefer to use one of these beacause I find I'm less likely to twist my back or stretch too far round when working some of the reflexes on the side of the foot ~ I just wheel myself around a bit.

Like Coop I also find because there's no back on it I tend to sit up straighter too.
