You can pass on certain diseases without actually contracting it yourself.
IE: You shake hands with someone suffering from a cold, you immediately shake hands with someone else. There is a chance you could pass that virus just from a handshake. You can avoid catching the cold yourself by practising good habits like washing your hands and avoid touching yourself in areas such as your face (eyes/mouth) where the virus can penetrate your "defenses". Herpes is passed on from skin flakes, genital warts from skin to skin contact and the rest of them are pretty much bodily fluid exchanges.
