Singha beer now only 5%!!

I don't like Singha because it gives me big hangovers. So i use to drink Chang. Well i haven't been drinking so much anymore tha last year as before so i am afraid starting with Chang right away when i arrive might be a bit to strong for me. So i guess i will start drinking Tiger or Leo and after a week or more when its getting a bit of a problem to get drunk i might switch to Chang again. I like Heiniken too but it would be strange to drink it outside my own country, same as eating Mc Donalds in stead of Thai food.

Nice post! but you need to complete the taste test by rating the green peas, curly versus little hats. I share your outtrage and ponder what effect this might have on Singha sales.

Did my own test Thursday on Bangla on way back from a scorching day at the beach, about 4:30. Took me about an hour at a beer bar. A few mates at the bar, the beer tender girl and my 2 TG's were all interested in the results and none of them were aware of the change. I drank a Singha 5%, Tiger 5%, and a Chang 6.4%. The girls shared a Leo ( don't know the % Alc).

Results were as you stated. The Singha tasted like an iced beer, thin with no finish. The Tiger has better flavor and the Change was fuller flavor, longer finish and tasted more like a dark beer, which I like. For the last year, I have been a Singha'er. Liked it. No more. Chang for me. If they were to switch back to 6%, I would not. Stay with Chang. They lost me. Have never tried the Leo, but if it's the choice of the two hot TG's I was with, that's good enough for me to try it.

This constitues my trip report also, since I had just arrived in patong 8Am for 5 days, but was jerked back to Singapore Friday 8AM and now USA for medical emergency for my 17 year old son. Passing time in waiting room at hospital reading the forum.

What about CHEERS beer and also PHUKET LAGER BEER. Seen both these in OTOP in Central but no bar in Patong seems to have them?

I agree, I need to write another report on some of the other beers, if not only because the blind tasting is so much fun.

Two nights ago I tried Chang Draft, which is 5% vs. the normal 6.4%. In another striking addition, it sports a silver label as opposed to the traditional green and gold. I liked it and would definitely buy it again -- had the Chang taste but a little lighter and smoother - will need to do a side-by-side tasting with Chang lite. The only downside is that Chang Draft is a "supermarket" beer. Not going to find this one in many bars I don't think.

I've had Cheers beer in the past. Here's why. I went to the supermarket to grab some beer and a few other items but it was one week after the new law took effect and I was in there at 2pm or some other ungodly hour (honestly who wakes up before 3pm these days?) (okay, the maid for one, I even had the reception write "do not disturb" in thai, but the lady just doesn't understand the concept behind that whismical gadget hanging on the doorknob.....) and I had picked up two cans of Cheers and several Singha. The supermarket clerk wouldn't sell me the Singha but seemingly had no idea that Cheers was beer so I lucked out! Or so I thought. I have a one word review for Cheers beer: Avoid.

I never did drink the whole can. I think I pawned the other one off on some unsuspecting visitor. Now THAT's hospitality!

Yes I put it in Joe's and you can also buy it at Siam Deli cold!

It's pretty good has a bit of spice, I believe it's brewed by San Migel or something like that in Bangkok.

Robaht. Great report. Not a beer drinker over here myself (good stuff too expensive), but you made some good and witty observations. Good luck with your thirsty explorations.
