This tangent should probably be pulled and placed under a discussion thread.

A sure fire way that nothing will improve is to believe nothing can be done and then doing nothing.

But I don't think it is fair for us to continue writing about this on this thread.

I agree 110%. It makes no difference who the president is; problems that we see today will continue to persists -- bad schools, drugs, sickness, violence, corruption, etc. The reason why these problems will continue is because there is NO profits in cleaning them up. 10% of the amount of money we spent on the Iraq war will be more than enough to clean up our schools and urban streets, but the government will never do that because they believe private businesses should do it. And private businesses won't do it because it is an unprofitable business.

I talk about history all the time, but I NEVER said "there will never be a Black President." What I DID say is that history suggests that life will go on as usual, and that big changes are not likely to take place. I remember telling a reporter from the BBC (who was black, BTW) during the summer of 2007 that a black man could be elected President, but it really wouldn't change things that much. I was right about the first part, and time will tell if I was right about the second part.

Nothing is ever perfect, but there have been times when we have done better and people were involved. There are countries where shit is working a lot better right now too, and guess what, people live there.

People have the capacity of incredible beauty and good but it must be brought out. They also have the capacity for greed and crulty but that is easier to manifest and it only takes a few to cause everyone in the system to raise their guard. We have to continually fight the slide into the abyss or we will end up there.

We can do better and I will be on the side trying to make a difference rather than with those apathetically saying there is nothing we can do because people are fucked up.

I am for the trying to make things better.

I have some confidence that we have a very different president than the past 8 or even 25 years and with that a chance for hope.

That's where leadership comes in.. people need to see an "example" of someone different, that they can follow. Even though examples are few in number and it's a slow process, examples have the ability to change the game.

People like to sooth their conscience with the idea of choice.

It makes it easier not to think about that when you are banging someone for money. I don't want to put a damper on the fun but lets get real. Life is much more complicated than these silly anecdotes.

Think about poor countries, the ghetto, and numerous other circumstances and you discover very rapidly that choice is an illusion.

Reflect on some of your wealthy friends and some of the middle class friends you have- do you think absolute talent separates them? I know first hand- I was once a teacher to ultra rich children- they are tutored, directed, and connected up the wazoo. Even if they make a dumb choice there is someone to catch them and pick up the pieces and get them a nice job in a big firm.

I am not saying we shouldn't have fun doing the hobby but please the choices are usually between bad and worse for most of them and once you walk down a path well turning around and getting on another one is just not always so simple.

If this shit was so lucrative wouldn't you see these girls disappear from the scene after a short while- yet we see them same girls returning year, after year, after year..... They are financially independent and just like turning tricks for fun? Maybe.

I know people intimately who made either choice.
Their choice, some money or alot of money, in the end

Choice where options are few probably, not in every case but probably many.

Oliver Twist had a choice to work the factory or run away either way life sucked. In the midst of the industrial revolution the choices of young kids of the majority of families where not very good ones. Wealth had collected into the hands of a few and although people could freely choose their options were limited.

The whole notion of a free society makes it seem that the individual is at fault for every fate that be falls them but in reality the options available dictate a great deal. We are not all on equal footing and sometimes someone makes a mistake early on that is of great consequence down the line.

But I don't want to further highjack the ButterflyNYC thread.
Maybe the mod can pull this stuff outta here.
