I think you will find Happy Soles that the forums are a place for discussion and not a place to attack people personally as you are doing.

There was no attack on you as I see it, what you said was challenged and in a fair way so I am not sure why you are so upset.

I hope that you will now be able to take the posts as they were intended and not get so upset when people don't agree with you. You are entitled to your opinion (or that of your tutor) but so is everybody else and there is a wealth of experience from many therapists on this forum and others.

I think you will find that everybody here has studied long and hard. Anahata is an osteopath and as my business partner I can tell you his approach to all health related matters is holistic, as is everybody else is here.

It's not often that I have to step in as the Moderator of the Reflexology forum, but I am on this occasion and would ask you to please temper your posts and stay polite and friendly.

she certainly has a bit to deal with....especially with the psorasis etc this may be triggered emotionally i know mine gets much worse when stressed etc... as for the PCOS, what state are her cycles in, does she have periods, does she know if she is ovulating....etc etc..

After some discussion with Candie - The penny has dropped on the GP letter issue!

I have to confess, that I only write to GP's when I feel it's absolutely necessary i.e. if I suspect that there is something that is being missed, need x-ray, referral to an orthopod, neurologist, etc.

I agree that, it is a good idea to write to GP's if you're unsure about certain conditions and medications, but it is a very good diplomatic exercise. Not only to show them that you are a responsible therapist and may in return win them over and get some referrals from it, but to raise awareness of relexology and complementary therapies in general.

I know from my 5 years part time work in the NHS, that Discharge letters after a course of treatment, which they had themselves referred for treatment, almost never get read.

So writing GP letters is something that I've never made a priority and I've probably put it off, but a questionnaire style letter, with return envelope makes it very easy for them, time and effort wise. Time for them is, of course, a rare commodity, so the easier the better. So I feel that all complementary therapists & practitioners would do well to heed this advice!

This is certainly something that we'll be looking into doing. Whilst both Candie and myself are as busy as we want or need to be, there are some therapists that need to, well, quiet frankly need to get their act together. []

That'll probably come back on me, but what the heck! It's true.

Hmmm good points raised about the GP letter thing but still not convinced of it's worth. Yes I appreciate that GP's (or any doctor) may be legally responsible for any treatment they give, but as far as I'm aware they only become responsible for other aspects (ie. complementary healthcare) if they recommend the patient to it. It's this reason why some GP's are reluctant to refer patients to us or write letters approving their treatment. I've also heard of GP's that find it quite insulting to have the onus put back on them for their patient's complementary treatments when it's us, the therapists, that should take full responsibility.

I can see the possible value as has been stated on here, but do not think I will implement this in my own practice as I can imagine that some GP's may just tick the boxes and return the form as routine, so therefore it wouldn't mean much as a method of consultation. And BTW I don't see myself as a therapist that needs to get my act together!

Staying off-topic for a second....................... GPs are legally responsible for the medical health and treatments of all their patients - not just their own (that's the GP) treatments but all other treatments which their patients might undergo, even if the GP has referred them on or not. This is why consultants and hospitals always write to the GP upon the completion of their treatments.

I am not saying that we, as complementary therapists, should write to the GPs after our treatments - except perhaps if our client had been referred for Reflexology by a GP.

Paul I can't agree that a GP would be responsible for any treatments that he didn't refer his patient to (would you include dentists in this?). The reason that consultants and specialists write back to the GP is that in 99% of cases, they were referred by the GP.

I do agree with you Sarah.

However I can see the value in it. As you know we have a clinic right in the Centre of town and between two surgeries and we are usually totally ignored. Andrew does get consultants referring patients to him, but that's a bit different to what we do.

I think we will implement it. We spend a lot of time on the computer with various promotional stuff locally and in our case it will reinforce our presence to the GPs who are mostly blissfully unaware of us!

I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Any person for any reason may go to their GP and request a free blood test to check for allergies. Food allergies is a seperate vial of blood but taken at the same time. These test check for clinical allergies. Many allergy tests out there on the market only give clear results on 'intollerences ' to substances and are often based on holding a vial of something and your reation to ohter products. These test only reflect on what is currently in your body and by the information you give inyour consultation.

For example if you throw up after a cheese sarnie then your stomach may be allergic to dairy- or maybe it was the bread or a bug or a reaction to what ever else is in your stomach, however if you are not sick but get crampr 4-6 hours later and have the runs then the bowel could be intolerant of those products.

They are not conclusive. or indeed recognised by the GP.However those with clinical test are entitiled to presciption of foods be it lactose or gluten free if done via the medical profession. Dont get me wrong i'm not big on medication and prefere the holistic aproach, however as a Coliac and having spent a bomb of money on 'allergy testing and elimination programs+ the added expense of specialist foods' i would recommend the GP for value!
I get cramps after dairy[]- I know full well it affects me and I struggle to maintain my weight but the devil on my shoulder forces me to eat chocolate []( even though i am Lactose free in every other sense.-so the decision is mine- however when its too bad i revert to no choclate.So basically our own bodies react to protect us.
Sorry to poo hoo and ruffle any feathers........again!

I thought happy soles was maybe refering to the point made in the original post about the client having allergies/intolerances?
Whilst personally I do find alternative testing methods to work, its useful to know that this is available from the GP, it would be interesting to check if this client(the original post) has had this testing done by the GP and what the outcome was?

Yes tend to agree there Lisa, emphasis on her low budget seems to a concern too- happy obviously understood that and reading what she herself has withdrawn from her diet looks like she was talking from experience.Coeliacs Disease assosiated with wheat ,rye, barley and occasionally oats isnt it, and i may have read some where that it can be linked to Gynea and Excretory problems as well as Calcium absorption. Wonder if this client ha been checked? Also has anyone read the research on Candida and its mountain of symptoms? Panicy has your client had any of these mentioned tests?

Orig. started this thread and would like to continue as I have now seen patient 3 times. The first 2 sessions were mainly very light touch and in both cases, she left feeling relaxed. 3rd session, last week, I told her that I was going in a little deeper. PS - She did ask Doc, who wasnt really interested and said carry on. 3rd sessions was done after Christmas and stomach, esp. small intestine (right foot) area was very painful. In fact, hardly pressed small int. but she said it was like I was stabbing her. Coccyx area tender but said she had no back problems. Pelvic area very tender, fallopian tubes bubbly. Left foot, pit. felt like 2 small stones beneath, painful. Light touch on Solar Plexus, produced a painful response. Again, stomach area, small int. tender. Pelvic areas very sore and again lower back/coccyx. Asked her to keep diary. Memory very bad.

Advice please. She has hospital appt. 6 months time. for problems around gynae. areas.

interesting to hear of the progress so far! As this lady's health issues are long standing its going to take a while really I would suspect, but Its sounds as though the areas you'd expect issues in are presenting.
The back area you mentioned may not be presenting physically, but "back" can suggest feeling unsupported on an emotional level, which may be part and parcel of this ladies ill health. Memory problmes are very common in CFS/ME/ Fibromyalgia, but I find that the reflexology can also improve this. With the skin complaints , is there something that's "Getting under her skin" to the point where its errupting? As for the small intestine on a physical level the CFS?ME can make the digestive system sluggish, also allergies can present this way I've foundand you said it was worse on the "Right" physical foot. On an emotional level is there something she "Just can't stomach"?(left emotional foot) Also the solar plexus, on a physical level, energy levels are very low with CFS/ME/fibromyalgia so as this is the power centre its not too surprising I guess, on an emotional / spiritual level this could signify putting up a barrier of protection having been emotionally or spiritually "punched in the stomach so to speak" this could be a weak chakra point as this is where we tend to soak up not only our own stuff but other peoples too!

It sounds as though all is going as you'd expect, has the lady started to open up/ talk to you, as this may well give further clues and also help the healing process ( also would indicate if further referral is needed on this level if its outside your own training)

Only thing I can add is to carry on. The intestines will be to do with elimination, ie eczema and the other stuff you already know about, gynae problems etc which probably she needs medical help with but you are confirming that.

Sometimes it just helps to get them focused on the problems and go elsewhere and get help with that, which she will do as she has an appointment.

Are you getting any feedback from her?

yes plenty of feedback. after treatment feels very relaxed and chilled. Next day, problems re-surfaces. lots of gynae problems, past and present. Noticed change in monthly period. asked what change, she said it was strange, not like before, tried to ask her to elaborate, but she couldnt. attended foot diagnosis with Sue Ricks and on reflexes relating to feelings, picked up that she had a lot of emotional problems with b/friend so they have now decided to try counselling. she is also going to attend meditation classes to try and focus more.
