there are acu points on the feet, particularly little toes, that can "assist" with turning... the energy in the points give baby the wherewithall, if you like.

i agree with posh totty, in that turning babies and inducing labour cannot be a claim, as such, but can help the process. even medical intervention (turning and labour) hold no guarantees of working.

these advanced procedures are taught on specific maternity courses, as i am sure moshe will attest. its not just a matter of "doing it", one should fully understand the process.

Im afraid it is not tosh atall baby's that are breech may well turn on thier own I have known them turn as late as 40 weeks on there own
provided there is room. some baby's are breech for a reason. pelvic problems etc. having baby's is a natural process, but there are risk involved for some.
otherwise why have Midwifes and doctors trained.
there is also the risk of knocking of a small piece of placenta when turning
causing bleeding
I am not saying it is not safe to turn any breech but doing it to some will cause problems
and it is not known which ones it will be safe for so is it safe to do any?
Im sure nobody would forgive themselve if anything happened to the baby which I have also seen happen.
I have been a midwife many years and a reflexologist and a great beliver in reflexology, I use it all the time in my practice as a midwife. but to put baby's at risk is not on.

I will also add I am a great beliver in women delivering breech baby's vaginally and not having to have a ceasarean section, just because it is breech

Hi Healistic, If you have done a Maternity Reflexology Course, you will know the pointers to use. If not don't try and turn breech babies when you're not trained.

hi glynis,

my 1st baby was breech, with legs extended and not flexed, so i was allowed to deliver normally, albeit under very close scrutiny (high blood pressure too... great!).

but i was lucky... my consultant was not in favour of C sections necessarily, but another consultant who spoke to me, would have whipped my daughter out at 38 weeks, no hesitation.

just as a point, the reflexology techniques do not use hands on manipulation to turn... its still points on feet, so, yes, if theres room, baby may turn. its not like what midwives do!!

It's easy Paul,

You find the feet of the baby by tickling the Mum's tummy and the baby will pop its feet out at the front for you to work on. It's simple when you know how!!!!!

Yes I realise you don't use hands on the turn babies.
And well done for having a breech vaginally as you say you were lucky not many doctors are willing to let it happen and tell mums they need a c section.
They are all frightened of litigation nowadays which is such a shame causing lots of them to practice defensivly.
I work in a birth suite where everything is natural we have some wonderful wamassageplanetirths and land births. It is so nice to let women listen to their bodies
and let nature progress after all what is a natural process.

I turned my daughter twice using moxibustion following advice from a v. experienced therapist. However I spent 3 days in labour as the baby's back was to my back and the 1st midwife did not spot this. I went to hospital and had synotocinon and she turned - however the cord was round her neck and she looked a bit grey. I'm not sure I would recommend turning the baby after my experience but In the right setting its probably ok with an experienced midwife on hand.

I am very often asked in my courses: how do you turn breech babies?
I don't and I have never tried.
Why.....?

I completely agree with Glynis Rainey. Turning a breech baby is a maneouver that implies some risks. Here in Israel there are only two specialists who do it with a great level of success being helped by a scanning and lots of patience, mainly because it is a delicate procedure and needs to be performed with no risks for the baby or for the mother.

Christiane Northrup, in her book "Women's body, women's wisdom" suggest pressing the little toe. She says there that it helps.

When somebody comes to me with a baby in breech presentation, I refer her either to one of these doctors or to a TCM specialist, to do moxibustion from week 34.

Maternity Reflexology has an entire arsenal of tools to help the pregnant mother and to properly prepare her for birth, but should not be used when there is the minimum risk of causing any risk to the mother or the baby.

We have also discussed whether to induce a lady when she is not presenting signs of labour.....and I bring another topic to discussion at the forum: what would you do when she has Polihydramnios (excess of amniotic fluid)?

I totaly agree with you moshe.
as for poly hydramnious, this can cause problems if the woman's waters break, (though usually it is ok)
because there is a lot of water in there the baby floats freely, when the waters break there is a danger of the baby's cord to prolapse out before the baby's head gets fixed in the pelvis, which would cause dier problems for the baby.
I would advise any women who has been diagnosed with polyhydramnious, that if there waters go, to go straight to the hospital to be checked out.
as I said though it is usually fine.

In answer to your question earlier in this post - I do not have any literature regarding the 21 or 25 years where a person can get sued. I was told by Denise Tiran from Expectancy Ltd on an email that we all have to be very careful as midwives can be and have been sued due to problems occuring in labour if there has been brain damage etc. I do not know the hows, whats, buts etc or any info on any particular case it was just some information Denise sent me.
I am not saying I agree with what her email said I was just passing on what she said.

Hi TJG, you are referring to Midwives. We were talkting earlier about reflexologists. I can understand that Midwives can be sued as they they are in direct contact with mother and baby and sometimes in sole control. But a reflexologist is not.

I would respectfully ask the question "How do give reflexology without direct contact"? Also as the baby is connected to the mother then surely given reflexology to the mother COULD also effect the baby?

Hi Healistic, I hear what you're saying but what I was trying to say is that a reflexologist only touches feet. (and to some, give nothing more than a massage) We don't deliver babies or have anything to do with the birth, drugs,or direct aftercare of the baby and/or Mother. It hasn't even been proved that Reflexology works. We know that it does, but there is no scientific evidence and without that there would be no case in court.

So the rules and regulations that Midwives have to follow are not really relevent to Reflexology.

I have on many,many occassions turned breach babies.

as you can clearly feel the position of baby in the foot it's just a matter of of stroking and rolling the area to encourage baby to move.

i often have midwives sending mums to me to do just this.

I know this thread is a little old now but I felt I had to say something about the 21 year rule.

If anyone is dealing with children in whatever respect, records must be kept as a child can sue for anything up to 21 years later for any injury. The previous post stating they have three years from age 18 is correct. Given that there are so many who are sceptical about complementary therapies may not beyond them to point the blame at these therapies in their ignorance. A disclaimer signed by the mother may not be valid for her child.

I doubt a Reflexologist could be blamed for any future problems a child might have due to problems at birth but I suppose they could be held as a contributory factor if, for instance, there were extra problems because the baby turned (cord round the neck?). I would leave it to those who are specially trained.
