if it was just for no more than an hour or so i don't see there being that much of a problem. i played guitar for one band in Karon for about 20 minutes... i didn't bother getting a work permit or dipping into the tips 555555.

probably very unlikely for something like this one off spontaneous moment you describe PS..... BUT...in the scenario where a rival club knows you will be playing and pays a few bht to the local MIB to come and check you out...you will be treated just like anyone else whether you are paid or not....remember TIT and it happens

People have been arrested for work permit violations in the past for such simple things as changing a CD or putting bottles in a bars fridge.

So unlikely to be caught for a spare of the moment performance, but it does happen. Especially if you have put someone elses nose out leading up to it!!!!

The worst... Bar owner in bar.. Has Thai staff and is allowed to direct them so doesnt have a work permit.. Sat on the customer side of bar. Thai cops come in, talk to staff, try to talk to him, he cant hear or understand them, it a loud bar and has music blaring, the Thai / English barrier and all the noise.. He says hang on, and turns the stereo down to speak to them.. Busted !!

Should have had a work permit to turn the volume control !!

Of course it was just a shakedown, he just had to pay, but if your not paying tea money or have any dispute.. They will use anything.

If the local police wanted to shake you down then they would have, for just 20 minutes, for receiving no monies, is irrelevant.

A guy I know decided after his bar/restaurant had shut to play with the Decks, mixing sounds he liked, there was a couple of staff present clearing the last glasses. The police walked in straight up to him and asked to see his work permit, as it didn't include DJ'ing he was taken straight to the police station, big fine, he refused, put in the cells overnight and still had to pay the fine the following day, and it was a big fine!!!

!0 minutes of playing with the decks!!! but they had arrived to shake him down anyway and heh ptresto there was the excuse!! if not the decks they would have got fhim or something else!!

My friend on the other hand popped into a bar/club and got to spin for like an hour. Just for the hell of it. I can't remember where exactly, but it was right along the beach. I think it was the same island where they filmed The Beach.

Yes you can do it, its the getting caught thats the problem. A BM that used to post a lot in the past, very often used to sing in one of the bars off Bangla Road with the resident band, got away with it almost everynight and quite possibly would have been okay if they had walked in, but not if they are there with intent.

So it depends if the police are having a good day or not? Ya, maybe it's best not to risk anything... I don't know though, I'd honestly love to spin there with some classic stuff...

but if you own bar,your not neccesarily working in it if your playing music,your providing a free service
anyway can you get a permit for a dj then if you own a bar,its something i've been thinking of because LOS really lacks any bar like this

Saying all that has anyone ever heard of a case of a DJ being caught/locked up etc... Even if police raid a bar I doubt WP are on their mind.

if you are married to thai girl does that allow you to apply for a thai passport and would this give you full working rights
