VTCT or IIHHT - difference in training?

Hi there

Just had a quick look at some of my local colleges to see if they offered reflexology courses.

One did VTCT level 3 including hands and ears and the cost was
£429 for 32 weeks.

The other does IIHHT level 3 33 weeks for £140 plus £66 for the exam.

So which one should I choose?

they are both the same organisation so it wont matter which you choose.

Yes, VTCT is affiliated to IIHHT.

Unless, of course, you meant ITEC?

My AOR course is going to cost me a total of £1400 (includes books, exam & AOR student membership). It is run over the course of a year, and totals 18 days, spread over 12 weekends.

My Prospectus tells me that the course will include:

How does this compare to your VTCT or IIHHT options?

I'm also on the AoR course (£800) being taught by a tutor who previously taught VCTC. She and was so unimpressed by the syllabus that she's set up her own reflexology Academy....

Hi I think that this is a really tough call ... I did VTCT at my local college and whilst my body massage and IHM courses were excellent, the reflexology course left a lot to be desired. So after I had passed the VTCT, I went on to do the AOR course which I have just qualified in. It is a really hard course and it took over my life for the past 12 months. However, I feel much better for it as my tutor was excellent and I learnt so much. I think it depends on the tutor that you have BUT also how far you want to go with it. I am keen to develop my reflexology further which is why I supplemented my VTCT knowledge. Hope that helps.
p.s. The other thing that I found out was that when I completed the VTCT course I couldn't joint the AOR or any other reflexology association. THey didn't recognise the course as being of a high enough standard for their membership organisation.

Ihave just enrolled on the ITEC course at my local adult education centre for £260. Do you know if this is acknowledged by the AoR, or anyone else? I didn't really consider any other type of courses as I have just done the ITEC A & P and Holistic Massage (well my exams are this week - help!!), although at a different college. Now I am wondering if I should have looked into it more.

sorry I don't know if the AOR do accept ITEC or not. Don't ITEC come under EMBODY? I suspect that they would like everybody to do their course qualification and then may be not?? You could phone them to check this out. Sorry I don't have their telephone number on me at the moment. I could post it later if you like. Again I would say that lots of people do ITEC as they do VTCT and they all qualify you to do reflexology. I just found that my particular course didn't give me much confidence to actually do it at the end of the course. I just felt as if there just had to be so much more to this subject and it just wasn't covered on my course - now I can't say whether this was the course content or the tutor. Again I would say it depends on how far you want to go with reflexology?? I find it fascinating and still want to learn more.

the other thing is that I didn't have to do the full AOR course on completion of the VTCT - although it felt like it!! I did six further case studies (instead of 8), four assignments (as did the others), can't remember how many client studies. But I did do the full portfolio and attended 8/12 classes. Also had to sit an additional A&P exam as well as the written AOR exam.

I don't know whether you should look into it more. Like I said the other two courses I did at my local college were fine and I felt very confident at the end. If I hadn't had that tutor maybe the VTCT course would have been different? The other thing to consider is the cost. The AOR course was REALLY expensive. It was tough going both mentally as well as financially as the course fee doesn't include all the add ons of exams and books etc. So that I think is a big consideration. Tough choices??!! I did VTCT reflexology and have found no problem getting insured with FHT who are a very big organisation.

I currently have VTCT and have insurance via Embody. I am also waiting on my ITEC results.
From my view I feel that both courses were beneficial, from VTCT I feel the tutor was very insightful and taught us much more than the syllabus. In my ITEC I feel the tutor did not due to having so many other subjects to focus on.

I learnt so much from the ITEC from case studies and real working environments, plus I was very motivated due to my passion from the subject.
AOR sounds good and very detailed; but I think to a degree you get out what you put in.

Can anyone tell me the perks of being with the AOR?
Has anyone had many clients literally off the back of being a member of the AOR.
I have seen their magazine and really do like it.

In reply to rakhee I wrote that I wasn't recognised by any reflexology association - not any association. I too am a member of the FHT as I do other therapies and I passed all of these with them. The AOR et al, didn't recognise the VTCT qualification as being a high enough standard. I am actually still insured via the FHT for the moment.

And portiaophelia, no I haven't had anybody so far book in just because of the AOR membership, although I have included it on my advertising material. I only passed the AOR though in May. Like I said before, much of it is down to the type of tutor that you have isn't it? I suppose the main benefit is that the AOR is part of the Reflexology Forum and so if you want to specialise in reflexology, then maybe it is good to be part of that??

I took OCN Level III reflexology 3 years ago and then last year the ITEC course. Both very different. OCN involved a tremendous amount of personal research and I don't think I have EVER worked as hard for any course - even when I was at college doing my B.Ed years ago! OCN concentrated on clinical treatments - full body. ITEC was a different and very enjoyable course concentrating on treating specific ailments, conditions and extended my knowledge base. ITEC is part of EMBODY [Cth, IGCP]. I wrote to AOR recently to ask about their requirements regarding membership but so far no reply!

Just enjoy your courses. Reflexology is profound and wonderful. Not everyone you treat will come back for more, some people just don't like it - but on the whole it really really works for the majority of clients. The learning never stops [thankfully].
