I would die of boredom in Surn and have a nightmare motorbike or car ride home from the scene.. the risk to life and limb just aint worth it (to me)..

Surin has some quiet expat bars and nice resturants.. Surin / Bang Tao is probably the highest value area on the island in terms if upscale villas and its beach is nice etc.. For those retiring with money its probably ideal.. No in your face 'scene' and no noisy disco's and throbbing nightlife..

Each to thier own, and I know many may jump to the defence of Surin / Chalong / Rawai / Kamala / Etc, but really theres nightlife in Phuket Town and Patong (and Phuket towns is geared to a Thai clientelle), Karon might skim in barely if you can consider nightlife to be some bars for a drink... The only nightclubs, disco's, dancing, and party to the wee small hours happens in the two mentioned..

You really should try it here for a fortnight before you make your mind up.. Its so hard to know what another person is really comfortable with.. My advice would be the 2 bed at blue point.. Its 2 Km's out of Patong.. Cant even see the bulk of town and yet all amienities are close.. you want to ignore the place you can stay home and listen to the crickets.. You want to disco or party its on your doorstep.. There isnt really a happy medium of 'western' style non scene nightlife.. Either you can enjoy it or you cant..

and it goes on to say that subservient implies the cringing manner of one very conscious of a subordinate position.
Synonyms include: servile, slavish, and obsequious.

I don't know about you, but I haven't met any Thai slaves lately, nor have I noticed the waitresses or the tuk tuk drivers cringing much, either. And the BGs, well, I wouldn't even go so far as to characterize them as a humble bunch.

Humble, on the other hand, is defined as

Whats the travel time from the likes of Surin to Patong? Looking on the map it only looks about 10ks, are the roads really that bad even in a car? Where I used to live when I was younger it was a 65 mile round trip drive to get to the nearest town which had one club! As I was only one with a drivers license at the time I was always designated driver too :mad2:

I love Thai people, I love asia, I like many many things here. But like most people I want to go out and have fun sometimes, without the hassle of something I do not like having to be there everywhere I go!

To let you know what type of person I am, as many of you accusing me of judging are really really judging me...I am very outgoing, wild, and have done some crazy things in my life! Butterflyblonde, the guys I met were mostly with their parents and not at all into the scene and some were even freaked out by it if I am honest. Many had been to Kao Lak or Samui and because of fear of damage their families went there instead this year, so that should explain some of why they were there. I too had no clue that this was the case there. Even on a weekend to Hua Hin it was this way, families or the sex scene...nothing in between!

hmm.. I would put it more in the 15 - 20 km's area with a very twisty windy beach Rd.. Few overtaking spots etc..

Also Thai Roads are not like Euro roads.. The deaths per mile are off the scale and everyone after about 10 pm is drunk.. Then add in the fact that (this is personal) I often drink until pass out and I wake up in bed the next day... Plus a sprinkle of CBR / babyblade.. Stir in some monsoon weather.. you have a recipie for disaster..

I personally have had 2 aquantances die (and one badly shatter a leg) in the last 3 years on bikes on Thai Roads.. One time it seems clearly the Thai lorry drivers fault but he was never breathtested and nothing was ever done.. Ambulances dont come fast.. Hospitals are not what we might be used to.. etc etc etc..

I watched a Thai guy go under a pickup and die right in front of my eyes at the end of my road one day.. I (and my GF) nearly got totalled by a speeding minibus while I put my indicator on and moved to the crown of the Rd.. A split second before making the right turn he flew by me on the outside at full pelt, I was probably 0.5 of a second away from being road burger..

Jaybee I would still use subservient as it is a very good word to describe how thai culture evolved. A thai official in government pointed out to me that if I look at pictures the thai men will generally have their hands in front of their genitals, I never noticed this, but one or two will always stand very tall, aparrently it is a sign of deference. The class system unfortunately does create a level of subservience in this culture, not just humility which I also realise is rampant here. But subservience is in regard to the deference thais show to people considered in classes above them. In that sense I would not change my mind...even if I do not personally like the word or concept. Read through your definition again, unfortunately to some degree thai people in the "lower" classes fit this definition too well, I wish they did not and I wish that no person ever had to.

Firstly and most importantly.. Strongbow bottles and blackthorn cans are in lots of places.. Having lived in Scrumpy country cider has too many bad memories but I see it quite regularly..

I think you will find Phuket a LOT better than Pats.. Pats really is sin city and I myuself can only handle a few days of the place.. The gogo's there can be a riot for a guy but how long can that hold your attention..

However you ARE going to be exposed to the BG scene if you are out in Patong but I am getting the vibe that the more normal Bangla bar type places will not give you a problem.. They are places to have a drink and talk with other farang (and Thai) drinkers.. The Roo would be my best suggestion for this kinda place..

I hope you do find what you are hunting for.. I know women that love it but my impression from most of them is they get a solidarity vibe with the BG's.. A lot of the girls I know / knew are the 'diamond tooth lil' type and enjoyed the hard drinking, hard ****ing attitude of the BG's..
