Card is good if you fly westjet a lot. You'll end up getting some decent return as your status increases. But if you're just a casual spender with the occasional flight, then get another flight card like Scotia Passport or TD First Class

I have 3 cards, CIBC Aeroplan, TD First Class Travel and RBC WJWE and have status with both major airlines. WJ "used to" treat their "status-ed" customers with some perks. Today, even with gold status and flying business, I still get treated like dirt, zero percent on time performance, consistently out of food/drinks on the plane, still waiting for a lounge in Edmonton etc. Last time I had to make a last minute flight change, the attitude I got over the phone, almost unbearable. I flew WJ twice last week, one flight delayed 3 times, zero apologies. I keep the WJWE card only for the companion voucher and because it is a MC not a Visa. The companion voucher is not really a great perk consider the fees you have to pay to use it (almost same price as an economy ticket); used to be great when the fees were nominal. The voucher is only good if you are flying business class on long haul flights to Europe or something but it is almost impossible to book a business class voucher flight on long hauls, those seats get booked up superquick.

At least AC treats their business class customers or customers with status with some respect. I tried hard using WJ as my primary airline for a year, but I am back to flying AC exclusively unless WJ has a direct flight like YEG-LAS which AC does not have.

TD FCTravel is good ONLY if you like being in the Expedia enviroment, points worth a more if using TDExpedia BUT prices are always higher if you use TDExpedia and certain hotels are off the list etc. etc. One time I had two computers side by side, one TDExpedia and one normal Expedia, prices and selections are slightly different. I tried hard to make TDExpedia work for me for 2 years then I gave up; simply don't like the restrictions TDExpedia place on me. So started in 2024, got the CIBC Aeroplan back and it is my primary card again.

For people who don't travel much, I would suggest the TD FCTravel, you are not likely to notice the TDExpedia restrictions or price bumps. Also, if you are flying economy, the free checked bags perk is good with both WJWE and Aeroplan cards.

Flyertalk is a good forum if you want to bitch about airlines.

Never had Scotia Passport, will have to look into it.

My recent trip to Toronto.
The flight home from Pearson was a real treat. I saw a couple of fist fights at gatet timee. Prior to that another outgoing flight to Abbostford , some guy decided to be a dick and said something derogatory to the girl taking ticket verifications. It turned into a very vocal argument . She refused to allow him and his family to board the flight. He was an ass. He tried to stop her from talking by putting his hand on her arm. Twice she told him to not put hands on her. Eventually he and his family left all pissed off but completely looking like the ass hat he was. I'm pretty sure his wife was going to hear all about it. About 15 people missed their flight. She called it out 7 times that they needed to board. Then there were people screaming at her. That was their own fault for not being at the gate on time . They were there just not were they needed to be to hear her. I felt bad for her but man she was fiesta, I was getting a woody just watching her lay down the law, that was hot . Travel has become difficult in some. ways since covid in my opinion.

Usually when I travel I'm on a schedule as it is often business. If I was younger and more or less on my own time I would drive , just for the road trip.

WJ flies out of Terminal 3 Pearson, with the renovation being done, it is a complete disaster; so many boarded up areas, you need to be right at the gate to hear the announcements most of the time. Terminal 1 is much better where AC flies is now much better since the renovation is almost completed.

For those who are not married to an airline because of status, heading east is best done on Porter now. by far the best economy seats in the business, no middle seats, free booze, free wifi the whole way. The no middle seat alone is enough to sell me.

ooo that sucks. Luckily I've never had WJ on my butt before for having the three bags. But usually when doing anything outside Canada, I ask to check-in my carry-on at the desk because I may bring a bottle or two back with me (and they dont check for that ) Coming back from Japan with AC, I had a couple duty-free bags with booze and luckily they gave me no grief (although security opened them). just shoved them under my seat and was good to go. Makes me wonder how WJ will treat it now though, given that they have Asia routes now and often for a bit cheaper than AC.

Also Qster review on the cards is spot-on. TD FC you're not likely to notice a huge price difference (sometimes I did find a cheaper fare) and they give you $100 credit towards a booking and more points for your bday. So you can get a decent amount of points to redeem off your stay pretty quickly. At the normal spending levels, these 'black travel cards' are more or less the same. Same insurance, baggage, delay, etc. Just depends on what environment you want to be in. But the BIGGEST downside for TDFC is that it's expedia, so you have to put up with their own policy for cancellation and changes. I remember calling the airline about trying to cancel a flight for a certain purpose and they would've done so for free they told me, but I had to go through Expedia and well... they weren't so understanding.

Scotiabank Passport is a really good card because of the Lounge Passes and no FX fees. I easily get my worth from it from just one trip, esp if you spend a bit

I looked at the West Jet card, after my Scotiabank More rewards wasn't offered anymore, had 2200.00 in travel rewards, we used it on a trip to Playa del Carmen.
I didn't want to be stuck only with Westjet, got a TD First Class Visa instead, have 3800.00 in TD Expedia rewards, haven't decided to use it yet for travel. Other main card is Costco Cibc, for the rebates.

I’m with Qster on this. I fly a fair amount, and in the past few years WestJet has been 100% reheated dog shit. I can’t speak to the specific credit card, but I would avoid anything that that left me tied to westjet to take advantage of specific benefits or accrued points.

You know they’re shitting the bed when Air Canada looks good in comparison.

If anyone DOES know how to get a massage on the plane, please share the info. I had a 19 hour travel day last week and it kicked my ass.
