which oils to use for ME

Hi

i have a friend who suffers with ME, can anyone please advise which oils would be helpful for her. her doctor has recommended that she has massages.

It is so nice to hear that a doctor has recommended massages for a patient, I think this is because they are at a bit of a loss as to what to recommend to patients with ME. The usual thing is to offer a course of group CBT, which is not everyone's cup of tea.

I always try to break down the symptoms for any ailment I am treating and work on the symptoms a client is experiencing.. Some of the symptoms I am aware of for ME include fatigue, muscle and joint pain, confusion and memory loss, sleep disturbances and flu symptoms.

For the fatigue I would use Geranium
Muscle and joint pain - Rosemary and Juniper.

This would be a day time blend.

For the evenings I would use Lavender, Marjoram with Bergamot.
I've added Bergamot because it can be uplifting and ease feelings of depression and anxiety which can accompany ME.

I'd put the Bergamot in the daytime blend - from personal experience, if I have Bergamot as a massage oil or in a diffuser, or even in Earl Grey tea, it makes me fizz and I literally can't keep still!

I'd also try Palmarosa, as this seems to have a positive effect on the nervous system. And maybe Frankincense, but then I have a thing about this oil at the moment... mmmm nice....

Interesting reaction to Bergamot Chris, one of its properties is sedative - this just shows that essential oils affect us all in different ways and that if one doesn't work try another.

I'll test drive this blend tonight and see if i fizz and pop - I hope you don't mean the digestive system here, as my OH will kick me out of the bed LOL

I also have a client with ME, and I did quite a bit of research before deciding on which oils to use for massage. There are various problems which can rear their ugly heads with this awful condition, including muscular fatigue, insomnia, depression and memory loss. Using a blend which covers the majority of symptoms presented by your friend is the best way. With my lady, I use Rose, Rosemary, Sandalwood and Neroli with effleurage. It gets her 2 nights sleep, which is amazing for her, and she loves the treatment for this benefit.

I discussed my reaction with my tutor last year, and she told me you can get Bergamot which has the offending constituent removed (is it bergaptene-free? something like that). However, I believe that if I'm using an oil for its effects I want my clients to have the full effect rather than something with something taken out! It also shows that this effect is not rare - it must be common enough for producers to go to the trouble of removing a component.

Thinking about it, I think a drop of Melissa would help this client.

Hi All

Thanks so much for all your advice. She says that she feels so weak and every muscle in her body seems to ache and weigh her down, she is really depressed with it all, some days are better than others but unfortunaly there are more bad days than good, she spends most of her time in bed, at least with the better weather and lighter eveings she is getting out into the garden for some fresh air.

I will try some of the blends that you have recommended to see if they help, and just keep on trying until we find the one that is right for her.

Again many thanks, ME is such a dreadful thing to have, so depressing and the light at the end of the tunnel seems so far away for her.

I am sure that just by having a massage it will lift her spirits and make her feel better.

Isn't bergaptene removed from bergamot because of its photosensitizing properties! I note also that it is good for calming the digestion, so I guess I wouldn't have too much indigestion with that one.

I also think Grapefruit is a good choice and would include it in a blend.

One of clients who has ME says that she alway feels so much better after some of the blends I use and give her. She particularly finds Melissa (lemonbalm) great. However, this is extremely expensive so needs to be used in moderation (£30+ for 2.5ml!!!!)

Bergamot, like Geranium, is a great all round balancer - so uplifting when needed and sedating when needed. The bergaptene is usually removed due to it's photosensitivity factor. Agree with Binah, grapefruit is also great in this blend.

Cardamon, litsea cubeba (may chang), rose, jasmine and frankincense are all really good for both the emotional and physical symptoms of ME.

Base oils: St john's wort macerate is great for nerve pains, arnica macerate for the aching, calendula for the nourishing/soothing.

Some people say that taking Lemonbalm as a tea or tincture is really helpful too.

I have suffered pvfs. The multiple symptoms means that everyday is different. You must listen to your clients and see how they are feeling that day. tonight i have used a heavy and warming blend of benzoin and valerian and frankinsense as i am often bothered with insominia. in the early days this would have knocked me out.

Other days detoxifying oils like juniper and as peeps already have suggested, grapefruit, are better.

My pvfs came on after glandular fever so i also found bay laurel helpful - just tune into hoow your client is feeling that day and be gentle x
