Yet another fire

My one brother works as a maintenance electrician. I always think of him when I visit as he would have a heart-attack if he saw what passes for wiring....

...and yet ANOTHER fire this morning. Much bigger than the last one and only 30 yards from it on the other side of the Irishbar/SailorBar complex this time.

10 shop widths and includes some of my favourite naughty massage shops gone up in smoke :-(

Went walking down the beach road to go for breakfast, and found the smoldering remains of a huge building complex. Many, many shops - it's a very large area, and apparently all the sliding metal "guards" that cover the shops at night contained the fire long enough for just about everything inside to burn up. This place is on the west side of Beach Road, maybe half way up from Bangla before you get to the next major street.

Apparently it happened around 4am or so. There's really not much of anything left, other than for a few shops at a couple of corners of the building complex. The roof caved in (naturally) and all the internal metal supports were twisted and bent as if they were spaghetti.

I took some photos - if I can find a place to host the images, I'll post the links here, but the images are all pretty discouraging.

I spoke to several of the people hanging out at the scene, who had shops inside the complex. All the ones I spoke to had insurance, and will rebuild, but they'll still be hurting for a long time before they can get their businesses going again.

As to what was left inside, for most of the shops, the ONLY thing left was twisted metal supports and the remains of chairs. Everything else turned into a pile of burnt dirt on the floor. Some shops along the outside has piles of charcoal piled up that in a previous life had been clothing or whatever. There were lots of melted plastic containers all over, outside the building, and there was broken glass littering the ground all around the building.

The electrical workers were there in force, repairing the overhead wiring that runs along in front of the building. The fire department returned in mid-morning to water down the place again, and at 5pm when I walked by again, there were still places that were on fire under the piles of rubble - smoke was coming out again.


This fire is only a few hundred feet (if that) North of the scene of another fire from about a week ago, and while they're repairing that building, this building has nothing left to repair. It's total trash. There's a plastic yellow piece of tape to keep people away, but you can see into and through what's left of the building structure - everything inside has collapsed, and it looks like the fire stopped simply because there was nothing left to burn.
