I read your earlier posts and it seems you used to really like Patong , has it really changed that much in 1 year. You called it your second home , which to me means that you had a lot of good times and happy memories, perhaps now you are more used to the full "in your face" atmosphere of Pattaya.

As you do not post very much , your post appears to be having a "dig" at Patong and I think that is what has upset people. You have in the past advised BMs to "ignore his stupid posts" , when a troll posted , so you can possibly see why people have jumped on you.

Perhaps if you did another post , perhaps a belated intro , then people would see that you are just voicing your personal opinion , based on frequent visits to LOS.

When was your first visit to Patong? What in particular have you noticed on your latest trip that makes you say ..

I had 3 weeks in Patong and 2 in Pattaya and enjoyed myself in both, but I can see the difference between both places. I have been in Patong on 2 occassions, 1993 and 2006.

It looks like you have spent more time there than me and I am interested in your observations on what changes you have seen in the nightlife.

I have been in Thailand only once. But a long time for my job.

I understand poster. I don't like Pattaya, just say this straight-forward.
But, more girls, more crazyness, more total extasy. But much less charm.

For phuket, I say, every beach another fantasy. Not for the girls, but the athmosphere. There is something for everybody in Phuket, not in Pattaya.

There are many ugly girls in both. Stunners ,I found esier in Pattaya, because everything is more in your face, and the place is more for single men, then for families. But most of all, much more choice!

Phuket is more relax. I like young Asian women, at my age, it is paradise. But I feel less "guilty" in Phuket, but that is just me...

But hey, I am a bachelor, I do what I want! As long as nobody takes my cane away, I am happy!

For fuc* sake guys leave the guy alone- he's not said he agrees that suicide bombers are in the right- he just said he prefers Pattaya to patong-he's entitled to his opnion (not that I agree with it) hardly warrants damnation-

and I don't subscribe to the theory that just because you haven't posted enough you are somehow less of a board member- it is what you say not how often you say it! most of the posts on here are total shi*e, verbal dirrorea.

I saw a piece in the Uk News of the World by a journalist who stayed in Phuket and called Patong, PATPONG- that pissed me off a lot more- this pillock was supposed to be doing a job for a living and couldn't even get the name of the town right.

I've been going to Phuket for almost 20 years, 3 or 4 times a year- but I must admit I haven't been to Pattaya for almost 20 years- when my sister who worked for BA got me a cheap standby flight to Bangkok and I got in a taxi with some guy from Hong Kong who asked if I wanted to share his fare- so off we went on the bumpy road with the mad taxi driver flashing his lights (not to signal vehicles to pass but to tell them he was coming) and taking us to within inches of our death- oh how we laughed.

Then it was checking in to a Hotel near walking street and my first tase of Thailand- a quick shower and I was out on the town- 18 years old and in Disneyland for the grown ups.

I stopped at this bar run my an ex US Navy Captain who had retired on an injury pension and he began to fill me in on all the do's and don't- do take my girls home- I thought she looked about 16- but he assured me her ID said 18- when I explained that I had already been offered fake passports, (so she might not actually be 18) he said her ID said 18 and ''thats what you are buying Brother''- so welcome to Thailand!!!!

The don't included getting involed in Drugs in any form- a big No No that one and worthy of the death sentence- and getting into any fights with Arab guys from Saudi- they had so much money that what ever happened they would always outpay the coppers- so be aware.

Actaually he was a really nice guy and he had a few bars in those days 1986 and was just opening a restaurant in Jointiem- a dirt road at the time. He had a big party for the ex-pats and invited me along- I was really privledged by that and looking back I felt very humbled- as iIdo when I go to Samui and the Business and Rotary Club invite me for a night out and all these people who don't know you from Adam, invite you in- friendship and good times.

Anyway I spent my days in the sun nursing a hang over on the beach (not the best) and my nights on the maze of streets- and go go bars-

you always find your favourites and boy did I find mine- there was this one place where I met this girl- a dancer- very nice- my place then hers and I really thought this was holiday romance (before I developed the ability to be cynical) and we are fooling around one night in her go go bar when I notice this blonde european girl in there basically pissed and flirting with the customers. She's young and cute and after a few drinks she tells me she's Bi and if I want to meet her tomorrow and choose a girl she'll meet me and game on- wow walking on air stuff for the rest of the night.

So off I go into the night swelled with the pride of knowing I have pulled a European and all these Asia women really like me as well- Hello Handsome man- they must really like me, why else would they say that? oh those were the days- what's that saying..'Ingorance is Bliss'....................

Oh what a night- high on confidence and full of booze- so I hit the town and make it home when the sun comes up- eating Hepititas burgers and ready meals all the way home-

so anyway next night I am up for the meet but Thailand syndrome catches up with me and I sleep in only to find my go go girl telling me that my lesbian lover has been in and waited- but left with a punter just before I go there- dam- my fantasy is just one step away-

After that is the usual lazy hazy days and nights until I have to take the long hard road to Bangkok dodging the pot holes listening to Nirvana on the Walkman- 'Come as you are' was the mottto....''young dumb and full of cum'' would have been more appropriate!

Then we reach Bangkok and the flights full- I'm on standby and its midnight- come back tomorrow try again! great advice.

So off I trott to find a hotel for the night with the Devil in me singing 'One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble''

..............well it would be rude not to! so off we go to Patpong and a night on the town- where I finally end up with 2 girls- maybe the fantasy can come true?

Alas- I wake drugged in the room and pennyless- I have to walk into town to find a bank to get money to pay for the room and taxi to the airport-

so a bit of a roller coster ride- good advice and an experince but then I found Phuket and the more I stayed there (and Koh Samui, Chang Mai & Rai, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia) I never really found the need to go back to Pattaya.

I have heard the reports seen the photos and in all honesty it is a Shi* tip. It has not changed much since I went there over 20 years ago- sure there are more Hotels- a Hard Rock massageplanete- Boots Chemist etc- but the roads are small and crowded, the beach is small and stinks (and I know Patong's is no swiniming pool, but Lam Singe and Kamala are clean as are Karon and Kata). The whole place is like Blackpool with signs for English Full Breakfast food and dodgy bar names and pasty white travellers on the sex tour-

Give me Phuket any time- but that's just my opinion-up to you.

Thanks Drew! You brought back some wonderful memories of my first trip to Thailand (as it was known then!). Its funny that the rather steep learning curve we all had on our first trip now reads like a horror story but it is the part that most of us remember the best. Pesonally, I would not trade it for all the useful information available on this forum. We are all busy giving advice to new people on the forum about the best things to do in LOS but I seem to remember that the backpacker crowd in the 80's and early 90's would take each place as we found it and not try and compare as everything was so different and new to us. What has changed? Us or LOS?

Spartan i do not believe you have been in Patong as anyone who thinks all the girls are ugly there can not be living in the same world as me .Soi Eric alone is full of beutiful girls and as someone elswhere posted there may be more girls in Pattaya but there are many more plain and ugly ones as well.

I just don't get why it has to be one or the other..............Pattaya or Phuket

There is fun to be had in both places......but for me the diving and natural beauty of Phuket wins hands down .......

Once you are in Bangla or Walking st I don't see that much difference..........only the red light district in Pattaya is huge compared to Patong

Agreed and what i normally do is sleep, massage, sleep and massage and then around 10.00 pm join the gang in MTB. Its abit boring but once you get into the routine, it is good relaxation and good for rejuvenation. I guess to each his own. Pattaya is totally different for me.
