I'm sitting here laughing my balls off at you guys. A while a ago I posted how the Thais were "greedy bastards" for way overcharging me for food in Phuket Town and now that I know better I will never go back to the places that overcharged me and I got raked over the coals by the regular members. I was told by the BMs that the Thais have a right to rip off tourists that's how they make their living blah blah.
Today I see a bunch of BMs whining like little girls about being overcharged for beer. I thought it was the "Thai way" to overcharge people. So what's the problem with overcharging for beer but no problem with overcharging for food?

Just wanted to ask peoples opinions as to what would be the best way to handle touts?
i'll be with a group of blokes, so am assuming we will definitely be targeted/followed/pushed in etc by these guys. Not keen on forking out 500bht for a beer.

Would a polite 'no' (maybe several polite no's) and keep walking suffice?

in my original post i was just stating i saw a lot of touts, i didn't realise i was going to cause such a debate, i always wanted to go & see a show in sea dragon, but i didnt want to be paying out 500/600 baht for a drink & now knowing they can be a bit violent towards us if we try & get in without them, i might have to give it a miss.
Raw & other owners are in a bad situation with those touts, with threats to car & family , what can he do ? just have to live them for the moment, untill if ever things change.
least i can still get into Suzies without hassle

and even the couple times i went down alone they just asked and with a polite no, backed off

my memory of the conversation was that you were laying into thai business owners in Phuket Town who had asked for too much at the start of a bargaining process.....

Not wanting to start this up again but there's a Big difference between a Thai shop owner starting high on the bartering process....as its up to you to find the level you are happy with before you purchase his goods or walk away.....and the one where a tout drags you into a gogo and you are ripped off without knowing the exhorbitant price and without any recourse

Last night on Bangla Road, 10 touts were detained by the TVP for harrassing tourists and demanding money with menaces from bar owners.......


Carlsberg don`t do tourist volunteer `police`, but if they did...............

Always a good policy to get your first drink bin and check it.. By doing so you know your not getting ripped, know the drink policy, and send a message that you have your eye on the bill to the staff.

I think these touts are here to stay, and many of them aren't much of a problem. Perhaps the real bastards are the ones who only became touts because they couldn't cut it as tuk tuk operators.....
