Ringing the bell

I was down at the Sunset Plaza in the Blue Coral bar most days when I was last over at the end September/Oct this year and most times the bell got rung, whoever was buying the drinks nominated who they were buying for, and most times it was for the Staff.

I went to tip one of the girls who I got on well with there when I was leaving on the 1st night, and said it was for her and to keep it. She accepted it but asked if I minded it going in their staff tip jar as all the other girls put theirs in and was shared out at the end of the night. I said it was Ok and in it went.

After that, I just looked after her with drinks and gave her something for herself when I went home. As I was on my own, I felt no need to ring the bell as by the time I left to come home, I probably ended buying most of the staff drinks at one time or the other.

On the other hand, if you were there with a group of mates, I suppose the bell would end up getting rung a few times just for the hell of it.

To the OP, if you are going to buy drinks for people, just, ask the people who you want to buy drinks for what they want and just buy for them. That way you get to buy drinks for who you want to and no extras

He said he ended up paying for "twice as many drinks" , so it sounds like the second scenario.

OK , not really that much money and it wouldn't "break the bank" but that is not the point , if the Mamasan had just stuck 3 extra tabs in his "bin" would it still be OK ?

Only a couple of hundred baht , he's' on holiday , be generous , don't be a cheap fcuk !

If a bar tried to overcharge an expat would they just shrug it off and accept it or would they complain ?

The op never described being miserable or counting pennies dodgy, just asking what the accepted protocol is, bit ottp here.

IMHO it would depend on the bar arrangement, I've had both scenarios 1000bt shots and paid individual also, I wouldn't be impressed if a bunch a freeloaders just turned up for the bell ring, if they weren't sitting around the bar and contributing to the atmosphere, I don't see whyiwould pay for complete strangers to indulge on my account, ( btw I use bunch loosely)

standard practice is the drinks are for whoever is sitting at the bar when it`s rung....not after!

i`ve seen it happen in a joking way,but it can also be a pi55 take if people sit down after it`s rung.

Local golf club has a bell with same ruling, you ring it you buy, so maybe not a LOS thing only
