Why do you feel the need to comment on the way Tarzan "acts" on the forum? Any transgressions are dealt with, whoever makes them, so thanks for the comments about him, but they aren't necessary.

The false info you are giving members here is unwanted, and to be honest, could be dangerous to newbies who maybe not very "streetwise" I suggest you think before you give info out, or, is this done on purpose?

You see, another question to you, which again I'm sure you will either dodge or ignore.

Simple, I don't enjoy being at, or going to, bars. I appreciate the fact that MTB sponsors this place, but I've got no interest in bars. Never had any, and probably never will. It's a long story, which I don't feel like going into, but I don't feel comfortable at bars. Perhaps that sounds pretty dumb to you, and probably you and most others here really enjoy being at bars, but I don't.

I haven't posted anything about the beach area in ages, until tonight at least, and that was just to say how much it's been changing. I'm not sure about this week, but up until a couple of weeks ago, there were so many balloons going up into the air, most of the "stars" you saw when looking up were orange in color, not white. Who do you think is buying all those balloons? It's certainly not the local Thais. There seemed to be more balloon sellers walking back and forth on the beach than touts walking up and down Bangla Road!

Most of the people I saw buying balloons were couples, tourists. They were doing this all along the beach. The guys selling the balloons were also all over, as far as I could tell.

For that matter, the police (mostly the ones in white shirts) are also patrolling up and down the beach.

You seem to be a rather level-headed person about just about everything. When's the last time you actually went down to the beach around midnight or so, and saw for yourself what was (and wasn't) going on?

There's hundreds of times more people there enjoying the balloons than the few people who might have read anything I've had to say about any of this.

So many other interesting places.................from your posts I would have thought you would have been more keen on Ancient Architecture or The Vatican type of places......

I'm still in the bar at midnight, and at 1 and probably 2 as well. The last time I went along the beach road was going back to my hotel at around 3 in the morning, and some right unsavoury characters are trawling around. I admit I did feel uncomfortable, and would certainly never advise walking that road late in the night.

As for the balloons, that isn't going to be a nightly occasion, so I doubt the "hundreds of people" will be about. Anyway, I was talking about when the bars close, and most visitors are tucked up in bed. I don't recommend the Beach Rd, or especially walking the beach itself late at night, period.
Do you not agree, or do you feel it's perfectly safe ??

So it's weird. No big deal. I like crowds, and I like Bangla Road, and I enjoy the beach, and so on. I don't like bars, and I'd rather be drinking a beer out on the street or the benches at the end of Bangla by the police station, than sitting in a bar. Most people don't do things that make them feel uncomfortable, and to me, sitting at a bar (any bar) is NOT where I want to be.

Like I said, I appreciate the fact that MTB helps sponsor this forum, but if the forum was simply about the "bar scene" I probably wouldn't be here at all. The name of the place is "Phuket-Info", not "Phuket-Bars".

At 3 in the morning, I'd rather not be walking around anywhere in Patong, the beach area included. Too many drunks and as you put it, "unsavory characters" who sometimes act in strange and unpredictable ways. So to answer your question, ANY part of Patong at 3am is likely to feel not quite so safe to me, and the fewer the people that are there, the less safe it seems. At 3am I want to be home, in bed.

Have I ever had a "problem" walking along Beach Road around 1am? Sure - half a year back, there was a group of about 6 foreigners, quite wasted, having their own private party, and as I walked by, they started yelling out for me to join them for a drink. I smiled, said "no thanks", and kept walking. They didn't take too kindly to being ignored, and I was starting to wonder what I would do if they got more aggressive - but about 100 feet further down was another group of about 20 or so of those same "balloon sellers", probably about to quit for the night. Maybe that's why the "potential" problem never happened. All I know for sure, was the group of rowdies were quite drunk, sound like they had a "British accent", and were the type of people I'd cross the street to avoid being near (which is exactly what I did, when I walked back to Bangla a while later).


I can't really answer you about 3am on the Beach Road, other than to say I'd feel equally uncomfortable there, as walking around any other mostly deserted part of Patong at that hour. I hope that's an answer that you can accept.

As to the balloon sellers, I think you're incorrect. My not-that-great memory is such that there used to be people selling balloons only once a year, at the appropriate holiday. For the past couple of years, those people have changed the name to "lucky balloons" and seem to be selling year-round. As long as there are tourists around to buy them, they'll be walking back and forth on the beach. I don't think it's going away - if anything, there seem to be more and more of them every year.



Anyway, Raw answered my question with a PM. I think he should post here what he sent me, but that's for him to decide. Based on what he's told me, I've got nothing more to add to this discussion, other than that I feel sorry for his situation.

Since you're the one that made that connection, I'd say it's you who has the problem, not me. I take it you're one of the guys I read about that goes looking for the balloons, knowing you'll get free food to eat?

How people relate one thing to another says a lot more about them, then what they're talking about. A therapist can explain that to you in a lot more detail, if you're interested.
