So assuming there are 6.5 billion people on the planet then 30% of all people watch the world cup final.

The 2bn figure applies to repeat viewings and every game in the tournament added together, not the figure for the 2002 final. The figures I listed above were supplied by Nielsen. Its actually a bullshit marketing figure anyway, because it doesn't actually look at individuals, just viewers, e.g. one person who watched 10 matches in the finals is classed as 10 people, not one.

Hi Paul! I thought I was being clear; I was comparing the World Cup Final (one game - 217m), not the whole tournament, with the Sueforum.xxxowl (one game - 100m). Three years out of four, you're right, but not when the Sueforum.xxxowl is up against the World Cup Final.

N.B. Allybabba, you can't include the boxing because that's not a 'live' viewing figure; the total audience might be that large but its seforum.xxxgered because of pay per view and syndication.

OK guys. We are getting a little confused here by what we are trying to define. I think the point I was trying to make is that overall the SBowl is the most watched yearly sporting event in the world. That means that you cannot compare it to the World Cup of Soccer, The Olympics, Ryder Cup etc as they are events that take place every 4 years respectively.
The SB may not mean shite to many people in Europe or other parts of the world. But to North Americans and fellow fans from other parts of the world it is huge. Over the past 20 years it has averaged 100 million viewers in NA alone. I know that the numbers coming in from over seas would be minimal but I am sure they would add to the total.
Trying to compare the SB to the FA cup and other finals of futbol are a little like comparing a GO GO stunner to chubby FL. Although both may be entertaining there in really no comparison. The sheer size of the population of the US will right off the bat give it a bigger draw than that of a European championship game. That is only because many countries fans would not tune in after their team is out. Also NAs population is primarily that of the US. Mexico, Canada and others give little to the numbers.
Other facts that give the SB the edge are that it is on during Prime Time while sports such as Wimbledon and other global events are not. With the time difference it is not possbile for any sport to grab the Prime Time viewing audience in every country unless it is shown tape delayed. (How many people from NA and Europe watch the opening of the Nagano and Sydney Olympics comprared to the Atlanta games live?) Hard to do with the time difference.

Allybabba; I agree that to Europeans the SB may not mean much. As for the question I asked maybe it was a bit biased because of the media attention the titty pop brought out. Did you however have to check who was in the Wimbeldon final or did you know straight off. You didnt metion who Maria beat in the final. You could also argue that the only reason you know that Maria won is because she is a hot little totty and Federer won because he won all but one Grand Slam last year. As widely known by any sports fan as the titty pop.
A better question would be to ask fellow Europeans who was in the finals and then ask NAmericans who was in the Super Bowl. Likely a fair deal there. What perceneforum.xxxe would have the right answer. I am not saying either way, just a good question.

Diz: 2 billion people did not watch the final of the world cup. That is an accumulation of all the games in the tournament. You could use the same number to state how many people watch an entire season of NFL or Champions league soccer. The NFL runs 16 weeks with about 12 or so games per week. With the culmination being the SB. Like the World Cup finals. Also the TV rights for the NFL are 6 Billion dollars. That is what the TV stations paid to for the rights to show the games. I guarantee you that the rights for the World Cup do not compare.

All in all, this topic can be debated over and over. The fact will remain that the Super Bowl is the highest rated YEARLY sports event in the wolrd. Other sports such as Wimbeldon or even the Masters etc can have the % of people watching it change drastically with who is in the finals or who is on a hot streak. The SB draws its fan base from not only die hard football fans but from anyone who likes to watch TV. The entertainment that surrounds the game is sometimes worth much more than the game itself.
The sheer amount of money that revolves around this game is unreal. TV commercials, TV rights etc. You dont see companies lining up to spend that kind of cash on other sporting events. Not even close!!

I may get some debated retorts from some BM on my statisitcs. Please remember it is just an estimate, not solid facts and statistics.
