I have taken a few TG's out in LOS and their main choice is Steak, I just thought that was because ity was the most expensive thing on the menu 555

Thailand is generally a non tipping culture, Thais rarely tip, unless like above examples they are using someone else's money. I do not tip if only buying one beer, I tip 20bht as a standard tip for whatever the cost of the bin is.

For those people tipping more than that, in general do you know what Thais actually think of you when you tip more? not every smile means the same.

actually, and just my experience
the only steaks that i have had in LOS that were on par with the real quality steak you are talking about have been the exact same price or more than what i pay in North America

600 baht steaks are not even close to the 40-50 steaks i have in the US/Canada

It doesn't make sense because tipping is a western thing and not expected in Thailand. I don't ever tip unless it's a girl that gives me quality service. Never had any issues, dirty looks or whatever, that's just the way it is.

tipping is expected in LOS.
their wages are low and they rely on tips.

Took a look at some menus in the city last night. Again, these are not cheap restaurants but high quality establishments in and around Darling Harbor, Circular Quay and the most expensive steak I could find was at Hurricanes for $57, while the average was about 30-40. The Clock in Surry Hills also has a Wine List - guess its not a pub? (looks like 1)

This is something we are going to have to agree to disagree on.
While I am sure some places do charge over $60 - it is by no means the starting point for a good, high quality steak. (Unless you get a BJ with your steaks? - If so, do they have a NSW operation 555)

No we're more 'across and down a bit', south-east of Bangkok near Cambo border; 50km to a Makro/Big C and what could loosely be called 'civilisation' (does having a KFC make it civilised?). The Big C sells steak but cut thin more like schnitzel. Still tough though!
I shouldn't have mentioned that PP steak . . . starting to drool at the thought of it

most places like that, especially in the midwest, you won't find attitudes like la upscale trendy spots. they don't care if you're on a cheap charlie trip or the corporate expense with padding...love to get them, don't really expect them.

Yep, they'll never give you dirty looks, they'll just talk about it when you're gone. In the Phils it's a different story, they'll call you cheap as you leave.

If you go back to bars on a regular basis then I agree completely, it pays to keep those staff happy. I dont normally tip much, just the change (20, 40 or 100 B if the bill is high enough) and I dont seem to have problems with the bars I go to regularly.

However, tipping is only really expected in tourist towns like HKT, CM, Patts and BKK (kinda touristy).

nm, we are about even with oz atm...

in parts of canada and the us you can get them primo and larger than your keyboard for $20, but in the city upscale, start at $40..didn't want to sidetrack everyone about beef lol.

I went on a cycle tour in Cambodia last month, 4 of us with a local guide.
He was very good at his job, great knowledge of the countryside and history, good general knowledge from listening to various tourist talk about their countries.
At the end while he was away I asked the others to put in for a tip.
The Canadian woman said "I never tip", the two from USA said they'd give $1 each (US currency) but left without leaving him anything.

I go out regularly (on Tuesdays) all over Phuket with a bunch of expats and visitors.
We bring our own wine. If we are charged corkage the tip goes down.
If a "service charge" is added on - no tip (except to an individual for exceptional service).
In other cases usually 30 baht each which should be approx. 10% of the food price (or the pasta/pizzas are over-priced)
- if there is good service.
We are a multinational group, from both tipping and non-tipping cultures.
If someone is not happy with food/service - no tip - up to him.

Fair enough, I was only talking about my experiences in Krabi and KPH. They didn't seem to take a tip when I left it for them but my experience might be the norm.

What about the toilet cleaners? In Soi Eric I wouldn't tip them everytime I went in, but would give them 20-50baht each towards the end of the night. As for the ones in the night club, if I used some cologne I would give them 20 baht but other wise nothing.

I had a guide on a 5 day MB trip around Cambo a few years ago.

He was a great guy,spoke good english and did as much as he could to make my trip as good as it could be......well besides taking me into a militarised area of disputed territory :surprised: 555

I tipped him $60.
I even tried to organise a job for him back in Oz with a big garden wholesaler and retailer who have Cambodians working for them.


In LOS i rarely dont tip but its usually between 5 and 20 baht,occasionally 50.

I could be wrong, just a guess, but perhaps Thais have embraced the tipping culture via seeing it on TV and in tourist areas and it is now spreading to all areas? It tended to be the better-off Thais I saw tipping service staff etc. But it is a variable practice which seems to have become more prevalent as time goes by...
