I agree, I dont tip in Aust as more times than not the service you get is ordinary. most people in the service industry here make you feel like their doing you a favour.
In LOS I do tip by leaving the small change from the Bill but if they have been very nice 20bht is the norm.
I will also tip the cleaning ladies at my accom if they do a good job, and chuck the poor bloody street beggers a few bob in change.

Right after I posted the above post I walked over to Butcher's Arms in Pattaya and had a great lunch of a coteforum.xxxe pie and a Tetleys smooth draught. When I finished my food and still had a couple swallows of beer left in my glass I check bill kup. I paid the bill and left a 20 bht tip when the change was returned. I grabbed for my glass for the last swallow and it was gone. I was so pissed. Why do they do that? It's happened before. This is an English owned Pub. I would think that would be a big no no in Blighty.

Any way I took the 20bht tip back and went on my way. 555

found adequate but not the top shelf steaks that are aged and prepared like in really good US steak houses

actually Vancouver has a chain sort of restaurants/bars( Earl's/Joey's and Cactus Club) that you can get a good moderate steak for 30.00( about 900 baht)

i actually just ate at Michael Jordan's Steakhouse in Grand Central Station in NYC( and only ate there because i had to leave for airport in 45mins) i figured it was a gimmicky restaurant but their steaks where on par with many of the top NYC steakhouses
the steaks were about 45-55usd

Also, no way a good US steak should be cooked on a hotplate.
Its marbling is there for flavour, but should drip away on a charcoal open grill - hot and fast.

Tipping in Thailand, as with many things, is different to other places.

First as observed, Thais are not generally great tippers. Usually it is just the coins, and / or a 20 baht note. I have seen some tip more, but more often than not it is when someone else (farang) has paid, and (Thai) companion/s decide the tip from the change.

Secondly, tips to the establishment (left on the tray / in the folder) are shared, though not necessarily by all staff. It varies, but I know that in some places only the salaried staff get a cut. In other places everyone "on duty" on the day gets a share. Usually tips are divvied up at the end of the evening, or the next day. However I came across one place (there are probably more) where tips and lady drink commissions were withheld until the end of the month. I think it was in a misguided effort to retain staff.

Finally there is the "tip to the hand". A tip put in the hand (or any other part of the body) is for the person who receives it. In most cases they have no obligation to share it.

How much I tip, if I tip at all, and who I tip varies quite a lot. Typically it will be a green note and the coins, but it can be nothing, or quite a bit more. It depends on where I am, who I am with, how good the service has been and so on.

Tipping is not obligatory, or even expected, so mostly even a little is appreciated.

In the end, as they say, "It's up to you."

I bear in mind the fact that those in the service industry depend on tips as a big portion of their income. Food servers and waitresses do not participate in the profits of "overpriced" drinks and meals.

that 30 is really good for van i bet, i'm always hearing about how beer, smokes, petrol is just a bit nuts...nyc used to be insane for some stuff....$10 an egg, boiled...ffs.

some things are just unobtainable in all but the select few expensive or the mom & pop shops...there's a huge diff in things like farm salmon alone i understand. there is a difference between chicken off the small family farm killed without stress and those beakless things you get from everywhere else. imagine that's true for everyplace. what should i be ordering on my upscale night out on my cheap charlie trip?

gotcha, let me try wording this way...

you finish the last drink of your beer and want another and have given every non verbal indication that you were there for more than 1. here in the us, i find myself more often than not having to get the waitresses attention in order to get my refill, usually by trying to wave palm out fingers up, or attempted to be reduced to just giving a little wiggle with your index finger. and then, so they don't waste 2 trips, pointing to the item requesting refill.

are the thai waitresses busy talking to each other and/or on the phone or whatever and missing your empty? or is a replacement on its way before you get the empty back down to the bar/table?

If you wish to tip a particular person, give the money directly (and discreetly) to them.
If you just leave it in the bin folder usually it will go in the general tip jar.

Deffo not comparing like to like. If you want anything like a 600 B steak in OZ, service and all prepare to pay over $50. I'm referring to meat of such good quality, well cooked, you could cut it with a spoon.

If you want to compare $15 pub grub, do it to the 150 Baht grub you get in LOS, it's about the same quality. I've never had a $15 steak that didn't have the taste and texture of an old pair of thongs.

I'm a frequent tipper in thailand but not big. If I have one drink in a bar and ddint get hassled I leave the 20bt.

I'll tip whenever the service comes with a smile and a thank you.If the service person is doing their job happily I'll tip them. 20 to 100 bt normally.



I have a non girly bar which I go to regularly and the service staff there are a pure delight. Happy to chat, muck around, play pool with you and quick on the drinks.They rarely get an order wrong.If theres ever a problem they fix it quick smart, with a smile and a sorry.I always tip 100bt plus there and usually 1000bt at the end of the trip.:gasp:

When I never tip, not even the 10bt coins is when they demand a tip.Usually this occurs when the service has been standard and minimal.When I pick up the 2 coins its usually met with an agressive"where tip?"- I respond for tip you need to be better"

Theres a bar I got to in karon when I stay there,I dont fancy any of the girls there but they are great fun.Normally I buy 2 or 3 of them a LD and they entertain me while I'm there. I then take a 50 bt note and say Ill tip them if I can place it inside their bra.They all know me for this.

I don't like tipping period. Its not that i'm not generous, I tend to be over generous. I was aghast to find out recently that my over-compensating was considered by Thais as foolish.

I also don't like barganing as I neither want to pay to little for a product or to much. Just the fair price.

Anyone think this might be because Thais do not eat steak as a rule? Thai beef is poor quality compared to what we are sed to, but then they cut it in small strips and mix it with spices and veg. Only better quality steak is imported, therefore not as good as home grown, hung and aged meats.

Steak in america has got to be about the best universally in the world, yes kobe, wagyu, but generalising across small and large, good and bad restaurants, it is above average quality to any other country, but there again come sback to my first point, Americans eat a lot of steak!!

back to the OP and tipping in LoS, a big generalisation I think there are big differences by region, eg Patong/Phuket is hardly representative of the whole country, being so tourist/western oriented, and where an employee would expect tips to boost a low wage. It's become part of the local 'culture'.

We had coffees/cakes in a massageplanete two weeks ago, think it was about 160-170, left 2 x 100s under a cup, said our goodbyes; and got followed out into the carpark by the staff member with our change! Actually felt silly saying 'that's for you' and she was quite embarrassed, anyway, smiles all round.

I always tip in restaurants (10%) and bars (amount depends on duration).
I throw the Soi Eric toilet cleaners 100 baht every now and again...same with my hotel room cleaners.

If you guys get a hotel pick-up from HKT airport, do you tip the driver on arrival at the hotel...and also on arriving at the airport when the taxi trip is prepaid?
One more...do you tip the porter that carries your bag to the room and then demonstrates the room features?
