Tipping in los

I thought I was the only one, I absolutely hate being fawned over in LOS, I even find it uncomfortable being in the same room whilst the cleaners are cleaning.

I do prefer being called mate rather then sir by service staff.

But service for me in OZ is typically curt, not unfriendly or hostile but very to the point. Very few checkout chicks make conversation these days, for the most part I used to get comments about my hairstyle... until I shaved it off. Aussie services is a bit more personal and a lot less formal.

And yet other times she scolds me for tipping too generously, say if I give 60 baht for a 600 baht meal... she'll say 20 baht is enough.. and take 40 baht out!

the 600 baht steaks i have had in LOS are somewhat mid to lower standard steaks
so that type of steak would cost 60aus??? wow

i just had a 50.00 steak in NYC Tuesday night and 1st, i don't know if that quality of steak and more importantly the care/cooking of the steak is available in Thailand
the best steak i have had in LOS has been at New York Steakhouse in JW Marriott and prices were on par with a good steak house in NYC and i don't think the steaks even approached the quality of steaks you can get for that price in North America

this where i start getting confused...there does not seem to be any system ...as we all know a small tip in the west indicates bad service....20 baht tip for a beer and 20 baht tip for a meal of 600 baht just does not make sense.

Last trip to Bali Mrs M tipped our breakfast service girl - intended to give her 10,000 (enough to buy lunch) but mixed up the purple notes and gave her 100,000 (3 days pay) - that girl's smile was truly lovely - the look on Mrs M's face, when she realised, was priceless in another way.

hmmm.....$60 for a steak in OZ.....I must have been away too long....maybe at the most upmarket restaurants for then best quality steak (wagyu or Kobe) but I wouldn't say its indicative of the average price

edit: just had a look at a friend's menu...he has one of the most upmarket restaurants in OZ...its in the opera House...he is charging $58.

Tipping is set up as expectations. If a Thai server usually gets 10 or 20 bht I think they would think thats the norm and be happy. If you tip them as in the West they'll think you are nuts. You get the same Wai no matter what you give.

Used to buy beef from Villa Mart in Chalong (from Aust) thought that was good quality.

just been reminded of a steak exp last year, maybe Oct, thought 'this is crunchy' turned out that trying to chew it I'd broken the side off my tooth. Would have gone anyway sooner or later. Steak was tougher than me.

$40-50 at a 'high end' restaurant on Darling Harbor. Most places $30-35 in Sydney City at least.
Pubs often have quality for little cost as well. The Clock in Surry Hills does a $15 Steak Lunch with drink on weekdays.

I get confused too. Her attitude was that it requires the same amount of work to bring over a 200 baht drink as it does a 600 baht meal.. 555

Before you tip, always check the bill. Overcharging appears to be endemic in Thailand. If you point out an error you are met with a smile and a new bill is produced.

I always try and tip well as the average wage is very low compared to western standards

If its a single beer then its 20 baht but if its a meal, wine, coffee and after dinner drinks then 10% or up to 300 baht maybe

I also make a point of buying gifts for the satff like chocolates etc so they can all have some or ice cream as they seem to like this more than the money and make a great fucss of it. I do this to places that I go a lot and buy it before i go in as a special gift for them and they do make an extra special effort for you.

The other one you can do is before you fly out go to your local $ or £ store and buy about 10 gifts of things that only cost £1 or $1 but are cute gifts that are local to your own town...................I got some Uk small Teddy Bears in Little Gift Bags and the staff went nuts for them.

Not a lot for us but little things like that go a long way in LOS

or you can call into Tesco Lotus or carfour and buy some really cheap gifts and take them out with you and this gets a really good reaction- far more than 20 baht here and there

I buy toys for the maids in the Hotel Room for their children which cost about 60 baht and they are over joyed when you give them that rather than 60 baht.

U.K had a similar situation with 'tips' being used to make up wages to minimum/reasonable levels. The law was changed in 2009 to make this practice illegal.

I tip 5 or 10 baht if I consider returning to the place and it ain't overpriced. never more than 10%, btw I have to go check out that 99 baht massage place in pattaya, will go in and ask no tip ok 555
I'd rather buy a pack of smokes or give a 20 to one of those poor guys collecting bottles or looking for half smoked cigs in ashtrays

Just to add to what everyuone else has said about Aussie service, People tend to be hirering young people theses days as they are cheaper to pay, I have found they don't have the spark some people have in LOS, some can make the eating experience unpleasant. All in all they tend to have a "I am getting paid no matter how I do my Job" attitude.
