Interesting topic. You should tip, anything else is just an excuse to be cheap. Last time in Phuket I made an absolute mess of the bed (with a little help) I tiped/paid off the maid 200bt.

Does the person serving you actually get the tip in Thailand?

So many places here - the tip just goes into the "jar" or a pooled account which is divided amongst everyone working that night.

If you leave the tip on the table it generally goes to the "jar". If you want the server to personally get the tip, put it directly in his or her hand. It would be appropriate to tip some for the "jar" and some for the server directly if you so choose.

I think it is curtious to leave a small tip for the staff that have to clean up your room every day.... I am not the cleanest person in the world.. leaving clothes all over the place, and i do appreciate it when i see them magically folded and on the chair , rather than the floor when i get back to my hotel room!

In the states I would leave 10% but when I'm in los I leave 20%.

Does anyone else get little stacks of 1 Baht coins taped together in their change? I take it this means - tip, in case you were going to forget.

I am very happy to see that most BM's are tippers. I have quite often seen big groups of people...8-12...eat and drink to the extent of 2000-5000 baht and leave 10 or 20 baht tip. In my opinion, this is an insult, better off to give nothing at all.

ALWAYS SEE THAT WHEN YOU PAY 5 BAHT FOR THE TOILETS.......IT SAVES THE HASSLE OF COUNTING UP THE COINS TO GIVE THE CHANGE.....

10% in the Staes is considered pretty low
15% is the standard, with 20% being good

Always leave a tip at restaurants between 50 - 100baht. Don't usually tip tuk tuk drivers unless they have been very helpful like returning to Surin Beach from Patong for an afternoon pick up.

Always make sure the maid(s) at the hotel get a couple of hundred when I leave as well. It's not much to us, but can make a difference to them.

What bloody bogs? I've lost count of the number of times I've almost disgraced myself (in a way other than the usual) through not being able to find anywhere in a hurry. My prostate is clearly not what it was. LOS should invest in those piss cubicles you get in Amsterdam and the like - anyone that persaudes the authorities to put those in could make themselves a fortune.

One time I tried to leave a tip for the maid by throwing a handful of coins onto the bed...probably 70 or 80 baht. Came back late afternoon and found them all neatly stacked on the table. Had to leave a note with them the next day to get her to understand they were for her.

I think nobody should lose sight of the fact that the original gesture of tipping is essentially a sign of appreciation for services rendered and not an obligatory bunce to a low paid worker for grudgingly doing as little as possible.
