I agree that a tip is really a sign of appreciation. For what it is worth, i have always received good service in most places i go in thailand. my tipping is consistent with the previous posts. I do always leave a little bigger tip for the maid in my room the first day to let her know that i do apreciate cleaning up the mess in the room i left with a friend. when you think about it, it is just the nice thing to do.

Here where I live you have to be careful, a lot of places include a 20-30% tip right into the bill for your convenience. Then people will even tip on top of that if they aren't watching. Works good on bar tabs.

I'm a pretty average tipper most times, but I tip very well for excellent service, and not much or none at all for crappy service. I always feel the tip should be appropriate to the service rendered and not automatic. I've even been known to leave just a few cents as a reward for exceptionally crappy service just to make a point. One time when I had horrendously crappy service, I left about .45 cent tip. The waiter followed me out into the parking lot to tell me I had forgotten my change, I had to explain to him that was his tip. :aao: It was a beautiful thing. I know, I know, I can be a real sphincter sometimes.

Correct, smileguy, and those girls work hard for miserable pay. Tips should go to such people as a matter of course.
