Thanks, I can appreciate your honesty and your not taking the high ground.

By all means you should go, the experience is well worth the trip, I can honestly tell you that a man will have a great time, regardless of his choice in regards to the girls...I will also point out that it is easier to say you won't than is to actually refrain, either way a great time can be had, now if you don't drink with intent or like to be out in the sun..and hate the water..then your in for a terrible time.

Eurogirl, I think it is time I said my part.
Each year my son and i(yes I am divorced) travel abroad together. Each year I try to show him a little more of the world( He is a student, he cannot afford it, I can )In the last few years we have been to Malaysia,Egypt Bali and Thailand mainly for the Scuba Diving(we have also been to Hong Kong and China but there is not much diving there!)
Each year we look for somewhere to dive.Originally we chose Pattaya (as we both like Thailand)however, the impression I got that the sex scene was very much in your face there. So I did some reasearch and came up with Phuket.
As it seemed that the sex part was less there.
When we go abroad, we dont do "Tourist" ie in Penang we had a hotel in the town not on the beach. We both want to see life in another country as it is not a some tourist ideal.We each local food, travel on local transport and generally do our own thing.

If you read my original post, you will see all I have asked is where to go and not to go. Although we will dive during the day we are not going to sit around the pool all night or watch television.
The bar scene is a fact of life, as any parent would I want to give my son the best of advice.He is coming with me, not with his mates. I want him to have good memories (whatever they are) I have no intention of sorting out his sex life. THat is his business not mine. I am not coming for the sex scene but I am adult enough to accept the way of life and I want to prepare him should repeat should something happen. I am certain that when he returns home his adventures will be repeated to his mates with a great deal of embelishment.
I can understand your feelings but be assured I am not some sex fiend who is about to lead his son into a some sexually depraved holiday to satisfy to base instinctof mine. How would you feel if in the post after we return from holiday I say that he was found in some back street, beaten up, robbed and with some STD.I then protested on this board how bad Phuket is.
To all board members, I apologise for the length of this post but I want to make it clear to Eurogirl that she should not assume that everyone who goes to Phuket is some form of sex maniac. We are all adults and have a free choice in how we spend our lives, As long as no one gets hurt and that includes my son.

Thank you for your response. I think your trips sound really nice and I think it is great that you and your son do things together and you give him an opportunity to travel and see the world. I was and am concerned though with the sex scene aspect of it as it is just my deep held opinion that while he may do it, you may do it, there should somehow be a seperation of these two facts. That may sound strange but I can tell you another point of view, my mother was more like my friend than a mother and while I outwardly enjoyed it, it sucked in retrospect. I wish my mother had been more "mother" like and less friend like and I know I have friends who have had similar experiences.

I think its great that you are looking out for your son but I hope you are clear where the friendship/parent relationship is and that perhaps you do take a higher moral road with him(even if you do not in your own life which is your business).

I also really hope you and your son are safe. Please if you can read my post on HIV subtypes in Thailand versus Europe and USA. It is something few people know or think about yet it is something you should know and perhaps share with your son.

Wow, I am just really disgusted by these boards at times. But this one kind of takes the cake. Let me tell you a little something about "educating" your boy! He DOESN*T need it. I highly doubt he wants you to be his buddy, your his Dad, act like it. I will not even get into my personal opinion on the whole prostitution/bar girl scene but I hardly think your doing your dear old son a service by condoning or trying to lead him into this. Perhaps you are the one that needs the education? Boys that age are adults and will do what they want to do, let him do that with his mates and you can be his Dad setting better examples and challenging him to be a better person with higher morals. What he does in his own time is his thing, but on your time I really cannot believe you are even considering being a peripheral party to this.

Just to let you know a bit about me, I regularly date younger guys, yes even his age. I am in my early 30's btw. I am very young acting and it suits me better. I am no moral-high ground person and am very free and open about sex. Living in Thailand has changed my mind a lot though. The entire scene is a bit sleazy to say the least. I'll tell you another funny story about educating your son: I was at a hotel having a drink and a 45+ year old englishman hit on me, he was not attractive to me in the least though for his age many would say he was.
