Surely the odds are more likely that this bloke has done something to upset someone powerful or rich enough to be able to pay off the cops. He might have told someone to get f**ked he shouldn't have, might have been a bit rough with a girl, whatever.

I'm yet to see an instance where someone has copped it in the neck without provocation, and I suppose, sometimes just looking too rich can be construed as provocation.

I guess if you're generally careful, polite, good-natured and don't put yourself too far out there, you should be right. This just smacks of wrong place wrong time to me.

I vote for the "cover up to avoid bad press" thought myself. Remember, this is the same island where they want to ban jetski's because one or two people a year die on them. The island's economy is based on tourism, and they've been having a hard time recovering from the Tsunami.

A German tourist being stabbed to death after pissing off a local is not going to help them. As we can see in this thread, people who should no better are overreacting. Now imagine how this news will effect people who don't have much first hand experience with LOS.

Its easier to cover to just cover it up. And whoever did the stabbing probably has enough friends to collaborate whatever defense he wants anyway.

Australia does the same thing with shark attacks. Shark attacks (as long as there is no body, no matter how many eye witnesses) are listed as missing persons and the official line is that the person probably got drunk and drowned.

My thoughts, exactly. Except for the bushido ritual, suicide by stabbing is an extremely rare occurence, almost never happens. And if you were going to do it, would you suddenly decide to off yourself in soi Seadragon of all places, in the middle of your holiday!!

I believe the cover-up to avoid bad publicity theory. Anything to keep the tourists form getting scared away. If this hit the newspapers in Europe as a bonified killing, with all the lurid details, then I think that there would be some nervous Nellies cancelling tickets to LOS.

As for the cause of it, I think this guy most likely seriously pissed some one off, and either that person ordered a hit, or the offended person was the knife-wielder himself. It is possible that it was a robbery gone wrong, but seems a little unlikely.

Many farangs must have seen the incident as it was right in the middle of Bangla Road so if it is a cover up as to how he actually met his end, there will be a few worried officials as the farangs won't have been offered a brown envelope.

It's significant that it happened 2 days ago yet nothing has been reported in the local rag which suggests there is being "advice" given as to how they report it!

Hi all . . .

As those who have met me will know, I am quite slim, and not that tall.

I don't look for trouble here in New Zealand, let alone when on holiday, anywhere in the world.

I have to say, that at various times during my 7 trips to LOS, I have seen many Farangs behaving like absolute animals, especially when with Thai BG's. This public groping and mauling of the girls is totally unnecessary, disgusting, and extremely insulting to, not only the poor girl involved, but to general Thai culture.

Yes . . . I know that prostitution is officially illegal in Thailand, but there really is no social welfare, unemployment benefits, for these people to fall-back on. Even a prostitute is entitled to respect, just like anybody else in this world.

We should all be aware, I am sure, of the abundance of young (and sometimes, not so young) ladies that are available for 'company', or what ever else takes your fancy. This is not a reason to make a fool of them in front of your mates!

These people are just like anybody else, and should be treated with respect. They all have a living to make, and very few options available. I really hate to see some ignorant Yank, or Euro, or Aussie, or NZer. . . Yes, this behaviour is not limited to one sector . . . trying to make a 'show' in front of his mates by belittling the Thai lady he is with.

This behaviour is exactly what causes friction between us and the Thai male.

Most of these Thai guys have Thai girlfriends, who in turn, and with their boyfriend's fullknowledge, are turning 'tricks' with us Farangs, for money. This in itself, must be grating enough to these guys, given the naturally jealous genes that lurks within us males.

But to see your girlfriend, or sister being mauled, and made a fool of in public as well as having to 'turn a blind eye' to the various sexual 'acts' that are necessary with Farang, to pay for your Mekong Whisky, and your rent, they logically must feel considerable resentment and malice toward us.

It follows, therefore, that there is a very thin thread of patience between them and us, and that it only takes a slight degree of provocation to ignite some sort of violence.

Message . . . Unless you are a complete a**hole at home (and I doubt you would get away with it in most western countries) make an effort to recognise the culture you are holidaying in, and treat your 'hosts' with respect.

We all know what is going to happen between the two of you when you get your friend back to your Hotel, just don't start the foreplay in the Bar.
