I think you have to put things in perspective-

LOS is a third world county like much of South East Asia- life is cheap and people are poor- the one thing they have is their pride- which means a lot to them. So what would seem trival to you or I, to them is 'Loss of Face' or Honour and to them something that seems trival to us (your taxi drivers arguing over 40 baht, drunk coppers having an argument when they are carrying firearms, an Englishman slapping a Thai copper/bar owner in Kanchanaburi- in front of his girlfriend and the copper's customers and then the copper shotting him etc etc) is actually worth then killing you for and going to prison for a long time. You disrespected them and their honour and they would rather kill than 'Lose Face'.

How many times do you see on Thai TV or in the press the killers paraded in front of the TV crews- notice how calm they are- they do not have a problem because they did not ''Lose Face''- this concept of face is something you or I will never understand, but it is something very real and something to be respected.

I have been travelling to Thailand for 20 years, up to 3 times a year for up to 3 months at a time and a lot of that time spent in Phuket. Thai's and Policeman have been killing each other (and the odd farang here and there) since prime minister Thaksin was a Policemen. It happens day in day out.

There were over 2000 people executed in Thailand last year due to the crack down on drugs- none of them were Farangs.

Scotland is the murder capital of europe and there are 30 stabbings a night most weekends- does that mean that Edinburgh should now be cancelled off the tourist map and American's and Japanese warned of the danger so they stop going to the World's biggest festival in August?

As for Paul killing Debs- that was a 'domestic' and happens in every town in the world.

I think we all need to calm down a bit before we start frightening people away from a lovely island that is just getting back on its feet after a devastating natural disaster that happens once every 300 years.

Phuket is as safe as anywhere in the world for Tourists! but like any place in the world you need to respect the locals and observe ''situational awareness''- don't go looking for trouble or being disrespectful and you will have a great time-

and PS please don't beleive all the stories aimed at frightening you from spending your money in a country, city, town and village that is desperately in need of recovery and your hard earned money.

Come back and see us- have a beer- smile and say hello and Merry Kissmas to the lovely ladies.

Its in the Phuket Gazette, and appears to be a suicide - The guys friends say he was acting all crazy/nervous/paranoid the week before in Koh Lanta. Sounds like a case of schizophrenia induced suicide to me.

As with gunshot wounds, there are several factors to be taken into consideration when determining if a death is homicide or suicide.

* Defensive cuts: In a homicide, there will be defensive cuts on the palms of the victim's hands and on the underside of her arms as she tries to fight off her attacker.

* Number of wounds and their location: A murder usually involves multiple stab wounds to the side, back or stomach. In a suicide, while there may be additional cuts across the wrist and tentative test stabbings to see if it will hurt, or to work up courage, there will usually only be one wound and most likely in the chest.

* Location of the murder weapon: In a suicide, the weapon will be at the scene with the victim's fingerprints on it. In a homicide, the weapon is often missing.

* Presence of a note: A suicide victim will almost always leave a note.

* Stabbing through clothing: A suicide victim will rarely stab herself through her clothing, instead she will open her shirt to expose the skin. Stabbing through clothing, even if there's only one wound, may indicate homicide.

those are interesting points but those suicide pointers are really for someone who has been contemplating/planning it. If someone was in a psychotic state with mad voices and images running through their head, they probably wouldnt bother to undo their shirt, also when in that sort of state it takes quite a long time to register pain, especially if the body goes into shock so a wild couple of stabs to the chest would still be feasible.

If this is all true and there is a witchhunt on Farangs acoming I guess the only response would be....to organise oneselves. It is always more difficult to attack 10 than one, it is less likely to get killed if you have numerical superiority. This is speculation on my part, I´m not sayin that this is the best solution. Still I wonder what the alternative may be? What you have posted and what Stickman has leads me to the assumption that a lot of Thai police officers are biased and basicly corrupt (This coincides with my own observations in the LOS). So you cannot rely on them if bad gets to worse...
Thus in the end it´s up to you or us to come up with a solution...a robust one I reckon.

Sorry but "Loss of Face" is not an acceptable reason to kill someone over, Especially for some of the reasons you have mentioned above...

That guy from the UK was doing what any guy would do when that so-called policeman was trying to proporsition his girlfriend and start offering him money to sleep with her and would not back off when asked too and then became aggressive, Nearly any guy from any country in the world would do the same, And not expect to be killed for it, And can you tell me why he chased after the girl, Ran her over, Turned around and shot her twice just for good measure?

What "Loss of Face" because she refused to sleep with him for money, And rejected his advances?

Another thing, Thats a nice little spin you put on how the Thai's act while being paraded in front of the camera's after the crime, I could be also be seen a them not giving a fu*k about what they have just done because life does not hold much value to them, It can be seen as a total lack of respect for the victim and that they show absolutly no remorse for it, Which is a very dangerous thing.

And you mentioned the killing of over 2,000 people in the war on drugs, Again that just shows how little life is valued to them, And a farangs life would be even less valueble, Now thats scary.

The thing that gets to me is people trying to cover over the cracks and make Los out to be the safest place in the world, Thats just not true, Its only safe if you are aware of what to look out for and aware of whats going on around you an what to avoid, Its by trying to cover the bad things about that place which makes it worse.

Yes thats my point Hugo, And how are just normal people visiting there suppose to know that, I knew from the forum before I went and kinda knew what to expect, But believe it or not some people still dont have the Internet, So how are they suppose to know about it if its covered up all the time, Its these type of people who end up get hurt due to lack of imformation and also from there own total ignorance, But that does not mean they deserve to be killed over insulting a Thai over say a fare for a Tuk-tuk for instance!

IMHO if that's what's going on then it won't help if you're ten or twenty, they'll alwyas be more in numbers... And if that's the case I think very few people will go there... On the other hand, as I understand lots of people in patong depend on the tourism, so why would they want to hurt their feeding hand?? :what: makes no sense... no:

I have a few times in the past argued with mb taxis or tuk tuks. Whether or not, this had anything to do with this case, I think that it is an important lesson to learn to not argue with them. For some reason, a fair few of them seem to be the most troubled and troubling of Thais. You never know when you might be dealing with someone who is mentally unbalanced, has a chip on his shoulder against "rich" farangs, or is very close to the edge because of economic or personal stress in his life!

In the future, I will endeavor to always 1)get the fare settled clearly before getting on the bike or taxi. 2)keep negotiation to a minimun or none at all - just accept or politely decline the fare offered, and, 3)if necessary, when the destination is reached and the driver states that the fare he agreed to is higher than I understood was agreed to, then offer and compromise and if that doesn't work just pay it, but not get excited, and argue with them about it.

In the end, it is really not worth arguing or getting pissed off over 20 Baht or 120 Baht.no: And I always try to keep enough change in my pockets, so that I am not stuck with handing over a 100 Baht note for a 20 Baht ride or a 500 Baht note for a 100 Baht ride. As you know, they never have enough to change it for you!

I also lost count on the amount of times I have heard that the M/Bike taxi guys that hang around Nanai Rd are either ''mafia'' or somehow connected.

Have heard stories from expats of those guys pimping out girls and such, stories of a lot of sh1t going down over that way. these same guys of course can be found hovering around the main areas late at night looking for potential punters.

Maybe just stories as some expats and thai's like to exaggerate, but you can't be to careful. Just pay the money, not worth arguing over buttons as many have said.

I have heard of guys fighting with Baht Bus drivers in Pattaya also, because they did not think it was fair that farang have to pay 10 baht for the ride when thai only pay 5.

In some cases, weapons like a baseball bat produced...over 5 baht ? What are those farang thinking
