Farang stabbing in Seadragon.

For anyone to lose their life in an unecessary squabble is tragic.

Unfortunately it happens in our own home towns almost just as regularly as in Patong.

We know that Patong is a wonderful holiday resort, but you have to realise that there is a lot more happening than the big wide smiles we see from the Thais.

There is alcohol, prostitution, drugs, gambling and large amounts of money in what is really a very small area.

Im just surprised as to how calm the whole place is the majority of the time.

A lot of us 'mongers' come to Patong for the reasons above (mainly the prostitution).

As has been said before - I feel safe in Patong at any time day or night - the reason being that I never go out of my way to harm anybody else.

Walk around places such as London, Nottingham, Manchester and Birmingham, and you shit bricks wondering how long it will be before you get mugged.

Give me Patong anytime.

I hope that it did not appear that I was over reacting, I go nearly every where by myself in LOS at any time and have seforum.xxxgered home hammered on to many occasions.
If I have to go around in numbers to feel safe it won’t be the place for me.
This approach is pretty absurd if you think about it, what you all have to stay in the one hotel and come and go together, yeah right get ten guys out on the juice to all decide to go home at once, all get your girls from the one bar or soi, not very realistic or achievable IMHO. That is what I meant.
I am with Ally on what bothers me is that IF a Thai did do this and it is covered up not only is it wrong but it may encourage other Thais, or the same Thai to do it again as nothing happens. There appears to be a lot of farang “suicides” in Pattaya also but not usually from stabbings.

I agree that it must be hard for the Thais to see what happens to their woman but stabbing some one to death for most reasons is over the top IMHO.
For me to justify that course of action it would have to be a lot more than groping a female in public or owing someone money. I do not agree with guys degrading the girls and I don’t do that before I get jumped on about this comment.
I do not think I have seen a fight in LOS, I have seen the results but can not remember seeing anything than the odd blow being thrown, not what I would call a fight.

Turning a blind eye to a stabbing death, which we call murder here, just because it was a farang, is not clever in the long run IMHO.
It has not changed my plans for my next trip in the near future.

I guess with newbies to LOS in the same way as some of us,we read up a bit on the new country we are about to visit,and get an idea of their customs and ways.
You could liken it to visiting the Middle Eastern countries and finding out its insulting to eat with the wrong hand!
Not a very good comparison I know to a Thai "Losing Face" and the possible consequences but a little same same.

I agree totally that nobody should be killed over a tuk tuk fare or something so trivial. Just how do people visiting be made aware,thats the problem.

I really hope that this is a one off incident and that the farang had done something to upset the Thai/s involved. If it isn’t a one off and it was just a reaction to Farangs, and that poor bugger just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, then the message that the MIB are giving to Thais is that there won’t be much trouble if you waste the odd farang is not a good message for us.

That is one of the things that draws me to Patong and Thai in general, as I mostly travel alone, is that I can go where ever and when ever I want and feel safe. I wonder around freely all through the night sometimes going from place to place and occasionally cutting through parking areas etc (behind soi Katoey) of a night.
I have never had any trouble doing this in Patong, Bkk or Pattaya, maybe I am lucky or naïve, I don’t know but I do not want to have to change how I move around when I am LOS as the local Thai men have decided that it is time to have some retribution against Farang.

Any more first hand info on this would be appreciated.

I would pay up myself, but there are some people who feel ripped off at having to pay extra. They stand by their principles and take the consequences. It might have something to do with not understanding culture etc.

They feel that they can prove a point of something very trivial.

He sure must have upset someone, and some farangs coming here have pretty bad behaviour and most of the time it is these kind of guys who get into trouble.

If you behave and don't seek trouble it is very unlikely you will get any problems.

Austrian in bizarre suicide


PATONG: An Austrian tourist died of knife wounds to the chest at around midnight on Saturday. Police say that he purposely inflicted the wounds on himself.

The dead man was named as Wolfgang Rodlauer, 36, a ski instructor.

Pol Lt Col Prathung Pholmana of Kathu Police Station told the Gazette that Mr Rodlauer was seen walking about the streets of Patong looking at knives offered by vendors.

“A vendor told me that he grabbed a Samurai-type knife and ran away into Soi Seadragon, waving it about. Then he stabbed himself twice in the chest. The vendor, who was chasing him, saw it all,” Col Prathung said. He added that some security men in the area had also witnessed the bizarre suicide.

Mr Rodlauer was taken to Patong Hospital by local people but later died from loss of blood.

“We don’t know exactly why he committed suicide,” Col Prathung said. “The knife, which has a 30-centimeter blade, is not a real Samurai blade but it is still very sharp.

“I went to [Mr Rodlauer’s] room at the Chongko Guest house in Patong yesterday to look for more clues. Friends staying next door to him told me that the victim seemed to suffer from a nervous condition,” Col Prathung added.

The friends had told him that they and Mr Rodlauer had gone to Koh Lanta the previous week. There, Mr Rodlauer had become very nervous, and had told them that he feared someone was going to kill him and he wanted to return to Phuket.

Col Prathung said he believed something had happened on Koh Lanta that had triggered the suicide, but it was not clear what this was.

The body is being kept at Patong Hospital pending instructions from the Austrian Embassy.

Patong doesn't seem to be a very friendly place recently, in my few visits I've always felt safe and never really had any issues - I find the scariest thing to be getting out of Soi Katoey "untouched"

What with the "suicide" in SeaDragon, I heard a story that a girl from Soi Eric was killed by her boyfriend (Thai) on Sunday night. Along with the girl that went missing from Soi Eric a few weeks back it doesn't seem to be the same place for me at the moment.

At the same time, it does make you realise that this is the real world and not just a tourist playground, where everyone can take what they want, with no respect shown for the people who live and work here.

Let's hope there are no more bad stories to comment on in the near future, Patong - and Phuket in general - could do with getting through this high season unscathed!!

I don't think it is a matter of acceptable or not acceptable. Any able-bodied man has it in his power to kill another man. There is no legal or moral right to do so, but there is a right of birth, by virtue of the fact that God gave us the power to do so. So if a man is willing to face the consequences of his actions, then he may do as he pleases, and pay the penalty afterwards, if he is brought to justice.

Loss of face is not so hard to understand. Is it that much different than the concept of defending one's honor? People used to fight duels and kill each other over points of honor, and I don't see the difference between that and killing someone on account of loss of face, except that it gives both parties some chance of determining the outcome.

Before duelling was outlawed, people could kill each other and get away with it, because it was perceived to be fair. But how fair was it, if one man was an expert with saber or pistol? Those were often wealthy people with much to lose, and they quit killing each other, when it became illegal, because even if they won the duel, they could lose their freedom, and the enjoyment of their wealth, or even have to lose their wealth in damages to the dead person's family.

Thais don't have to worry much about losing their wealth, since most of them haven't any. So, if they are willing to chance losing their freedom, and put "face" above moral considerations, then they can pretty well do as they please when their honor is damaged. When it is the only thing you have that is worth anything, honor may be worth a lot. For some people, it may even be worth more than their own life.

What it all boils down to, is that maybe people should just show a little more respect for one another, and consider the fact that another man may hold his honor above his freedom, and, for that reason, you should not go around insulting others, but treat them with respect. Recognize that if you treat others in a demeaning way, that there may be a risk involved, and a price to pay.

i read on other message boards that some of the tuk tuk drivers come from laos ,and for some reason hate westerners, so it only takes an argument for them to kick off big-time
when i was there last year, one of the b/g ,s i went with had a femail friend / m/bike taxi rider ,which i used --really nice lady - (well she didn,t stab me anyway)
but on the whole i avoided using tuk tuks , why give your buisness to them if you can avoid it?

Maybe it's the fact that westerners are "stabbing" their sisters/wives/girlfriends between their legs with their 6 inch weapons that ticks off the tuk tuk/motorbike taxi drivers.

Sorry JB I don't think your arguement stands up at all.
There is a huge difference between a duel and a Thai with a knife stabbing a drunk and probably defenceless old farang.And many won't lose their freedom because they won't get caught. The wall of silence appears.

I understand the loss of "face" but don't agree with it. But its their country,we are guests and have to abide by their customs. Its OK if you know about them,but what if you don't.

I think Travel Agents and Goverments should be responsible for getting the correct imformation out to people traveling to destinations like Thailand who have a totally different culture and way of life, It would not cost a lot to print up little booklets with this kinda imformation, They could add the extra 5euro for the booklet to the cost of the flight (Compulsary).

Because lets face it, People who would book flights over the Internet would 9 times out of 10 check around the Internet and read up on imformation on the destination of there choice, It really is that simple.

Good point, but you also have to remember that these guys are quite happy to let their sisters/wives/girlfriends go out and get humped so they can drink and gamble the money the women make.
Even if they don't drink it or gamble it, and they use it to live on, then they are just as bad. There are thousands of people all over Thailand with very low paid jobs and they dont sell their a$$. They work hard in factories and farms etc for small money.

If the men dont like it, they shouldnt let/make the women do it.
