my wife is 9 years younger than me, not that big of a gap but i think we still had a vast maturity gap and you just need to take the time to actually let them know you and you know them

as far as what you did, everyone has done it on their 1st couple of trips. you get that "white knight" feeling and think you are offering her the world when in reality, you may be reminding her the life she is leading is not what she wants ( being a prostitute)
you didn't do anything 1000's of guys have done also

but sometimes these bg's do get a raw deal when it is the farangs that should step back a minute and think about things and not react so emotionally( nice advice from the biggest hothead here 5555)

Possibly is negative, but not meant as an insult. Definitely not common sense the way we as westerners understand it. I deal with Thais everyday and have Thai staff so I see it firsthand. I'm not trying to belittle anyone, i just put it in simplistic term. I'm quite sure that Thais also have 'not so positive thoughts' about farangs.

Back to topic,
Thais don't have the awareness of the wider world that westerners have and don't see the bigger picture and how actions impact on other things and it is no surprise we think they only see now, whereas they have never been taught or had the opportunity to see .
If you have a dispute with service staff they only argue from one point of view cos its the only one they know..A goes here, B goes there.. they don't even know about repeat business and customer referrals.

Is it fair to condemn them for something which they don't they are doing?

I have found that Thai people in general will always remember a kindness.
Obviously there are exceptions just like anywhere else and you don't expect charity in a bar.....

Tony, she was an idiot. No maturity at all. Just can't think past the end of her nose. She wasn't looking ahead and she is the perfect case of "Thais live only for one day."

I stayed with a girl like this. I lay on the bed watching her, naked with her long hair flowing, pacing back and forth in my room, as she spoke to one of her sponsors(a black American) on the phone, demanding that he send her 10K to buy tickets for them to go to Udon Thani later that month. He told her that he could do it on the internet, and that he would buy one round trip ticket for him, and a one-way ticket for her, since there was no reason for her to return to BKK, as he was sponsoring her, and she agreed to stay in the village. She argued, cried, and blasted him that he MUST send her the 10K immediately or they were finished. She insisted to him that she only wanted the return ticket, so that she could spend a couple hours longer with him, before his flight from BKK to US. He told her that wasn't necessary, but she insisted and put their whole relationship on the line over a 2500 Baht ticket from Udon Thani to BKK. For chrissakes, she could take the bus to Pattya for a 500 Baht, as she usually did! She swore to him she loved him, and he sent the money. Then, all keyed up, she jumped in the sack with me for the best sex we ever had.

He sent the 10K, but afterwards, he spoke with a friend of his in Phuket, and told him what happened. His friend convinced him to read the writing on the wall, i.e., she wasn't going to stay in the village, but was headed for Pattaya and back to work, the moment his plane lifted off, that much was obvious. And she even had the nerve to insist he pay for the ticket so she could go back to work!! He accepted the sage counsel of his friend, called her and broke off the relationship.

So there goes one of her 30K per month sponsors. All over a 2500 Baht plane ticket, a savings of 2000 Baht over bus fare. How many hundreds of thousands of Baht did her stupidity cost her? But she could not see that. Not at all. It was just put down to bad luck, time to go make more offerings to Buddha, so her luck would get better! So off to the temple we went! 55555.....

This girl still had an Aussie sponsor good for 30K per month, and was hoping he could get up the dough to take her to Oz. She was a gal who very much likes young hip farangs(but dislikes Thais), and would love it if a young guy with money would take her to his country. But she made it clear that it was a matter of first come, first serve, and she would take the first solid offer she got, which would likely be from an older guy, as she wants to get out of LOS, and is not going to be overly picky, as long as the guy has money and treats her well, and is not ugly.

Although she prefers blacks, the fortune teller told her she would end up with a very fat white guy! 55555... She was not happy to hear that. I think the fortune teller knows his stuff. And I had a great time teasing her about it! :na:

no bit of common sense in them...they even don't know about repeated business.

Well, that might be true, I can't argue against it.

What counts is that at the friggn end, both worlds are as stupid in their actions.

So, as long as a few stand above, great...the ones who understand a bit of keeping cash working for them or getting repeated customers, are a
a minority in both worlds. That was more or less my point.

I agree with a lot that has been said above and certainly hold with Paulies view that TIME is a very important, if not the all important factor in relations with a tg, or any woman for that matter...
I have known a tg for 2 and a half years , shes now just over 27 , very attractive and quite bright. There is no other reason that I can fathom that she has kept reigniting things except that, as shes often says , "you understand me" which I think she means ,' youve known me longer than all the other men' and maybe shes right. If shes busy, I understand it, if shes tired I let her sleep, if shes moody, I let her go.
I never ' spoil ' her, thats for the punters at her bar, I didnt from the start because then she wouldnt know if Im only buying her and allaying my conscience with money, and if I overpay her I'll always be wondering if shes only there for the money....
So it certainly aint the money, its now to a point that moneys only given by me to keep ME once removed from a return to a 'live-in' situation .
And while the main reason is she is too young for me , she seems to hope I'll get over that, so I hold with Paulies statement that Thais arent ageist.
But my countrymen are, and given the wild fluctuations in currencys alone, I cant see me having any certainty that I'll always live in LOS, and she cant cognify all the greif I'll face with having a young mail order bride (Bride! God forbid) if we go to my country...

But we are also talking about INDIVIDUALS here and plenty will take all they can get and burn it, some as a result of empty promises before, some because they are women and dont feel that 'love spark', some because they are stupid..
And INDIVIDUALITY, even stupidity, is expressed in LOS by the words , " Up to me!"...
And in that aspect, the part of the Thai that says Im doing the stupid thing cause I want to and its up to me without anyones intervention , without thinking about tomorrow, only thinking about the NOW...
With that, they are TRUELY FREE...

Totally agree.. Thats why the cure for this is not low interest rates, cheap credit, and make the same mistakes, its high interest rates, massive failures, encouraging savings, and build from a new base where excess consumption is discouraged.

The kinda scary thing about Thai kindness on many occasions, has nothing to do with what comes from their heart; it's more about making merit and trying to make sure they move up the pecking order in the next life

Although Thailand is fast becoming a consumer society I think one of the things that allows them not too worry too much about tomorrow is the social and support networks they have;

When we lose a job and our income, it's a fkin disaster as everything revolves around the need for substantial amounts of money and other than small government payouts there wont be much support coming from elsewhere
Thai's will just go home to the family until something else turns up. They will be able to eat, have a roof over their heads and generally have the support of family and the local community to take care of their basic economic needs

I remember a work colleague, when I first arrived in Australia, tell ing me it was a great place cos, unlike the U.K., if you're out of work you can go lie on the beach all day.
This was 32 years ago and believe me there are plenty doing just that as I type - all getting the dole money, all with no shirts on, with a beer in their hand and saying how tough it is cos the dole money aint much.
Well you have to pity the poor guys, personally I wouldn't give them jack shite and then see how they got on .......... some people in some countries never had it so good - recession, what recession for these bludges.

The government can't sit back and do nothing while people's lives..jobs, houses, relationships go to hell. It would rather be seen to do something even if it was the wrong thing, but they are being smart getting other countries to buy into the illusion!
It's understandable to say greed caused it so sod them it's their own fault. We'll start again and they won't make the same mistakes, but that is not and can't be an option.



I'm not saying Thais are stupid, just not familiar with western ways as their upbringing and enviroment are so different from the West.

Think I've only been lied to once when one of this particular girls mates told me she have customer (No pulled punches there then!) after I had booked her for the night, I rang her and she said she was ill, no credit on her phone, in her loom etc etc Yadder Yadder! Par for the course out here IMHO, no problem! Told her I go with someone else! Lost my turn!

I once told a girl that she can tell me the truth and she said she had fcuked someone I'd rather she hadn't as I knew him to treat girls quite badly, so told her to go back to telling me porky pies again! I'd rather not know.

The whole thing reminds me so much about something Stephen Covey said in his book the 7 Habbits when he talks about "The map is not the territory"

The map is simply an explanation of certain aspects of the territory.

He gives an example where due to an printing error, the map of Chicago was printed on a map of Detroit.

You might have the right behavior, the right attitude, even you have the greatest positive thinking, all your efforts would lead to no where.

I can see somehow the comparison when you lay your western common sense (the map) on Thailand (the territory) and try to navigate through it ... it's just programmed to go all wrong.

Well, maybe not the best comparison, but I kinda like that thinking;-)
